[edit] Biography

Born on June 28, 1941 in Trenton, New Jersey, Al Downing (Alphonso Erwin Downing) played for the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers over the course of his 17 year career. Downing broke into the bigs on July 19, 1961 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 2.56 ERA in 175.2 innings pitched in 1963, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Al Downing's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1971, when he posted a 2.68 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 136 batters. However, others believe that it was 1964, when he posted a 3.47 ERA, won 13 games and struck out 217 batters.
