[edit] Biography

Born on March 18, 1911 in Noble, Oklahoma, Al Benton (John Alton Benton) played for the Philadelphia Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 14 year career. Benton broke into the bigs on April 18, 1934 with the Philadelphia Athletics, and put up a 4.88 ERA in 155 innings pitched in 1934, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Al Benton's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1941, when he posted a 2.97 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 63 batters. However, others believe that it was 1945, when he posted a 2.02 ERA, won 13 games and struck out 76 batters.
