According to player agent Melvin Roman, catcher Yorvit Torrealba will leave the 2007 National League champion Colorado Rockies and head east to the Big Apple for 2008.
Roman in an interview on WEPN-AM in New York City (1050 ESPN Radio) earlier today, his client is expected to finalize a three-year, $14.4 million contract with the New York Mets. It wil effectively end Paul Lo Duca's two-year tenure with the team. Ramon Castro is expected to remain the backup catcher, but may see more playing time than he did behind Lo Duca on the depth chart.
Torrealba only hit .255 with 8 home runs and drove in 47 runs for the 2007 campaign, plus he wasn't that successful in throwing base stealers out with regularity (just 13 of 74). Is he worth the contract? Much will have to be proven by Torrealba to validate it. The plus side in his favor is how he was an important player in the Rockies' run to get into the playoffs and reach the World Series winning 21 of 22 games.
