Adios Durazo y Wasdin

I got to use some of the Spanish I’m learning this semester. My teacher would be terribly impressed, I’m sure.

The Rangers announced today that they have released DH Erubiel Durazo and pitcher John Wasdin. Durazo was only expected to stay on as a fill-in for Nevin, and since he seems to be working out so far this spring, they did not have much use for him. As GM Jon Daniels said, between David Dellucci and Phil Nevin, the Rangers are pretty well set at DH.

The real surprise was the release of Wasdin. Even though he was having an absolutely wretched spring (10.64 ERA on 23 hits in 11 innings), I expected the Rangers to stick with the veteran. After all, the Rangers aren’t deep on pitching, and it’s no secret that their bullpen is particularly sparse. Despite the surprise of releasing Wasdin, there is not much secret among the Ranger faithful as to what this means for the team. As MLB.com pointed out, this likely paves the way for a spot for highly-touted Rule V acquisition Fabio Castro.

By the way, I saw a commercial today for the first regular season baseball game between the Indians and White Sox this Sunday. It’s hard to believe we’re really this close. Holy crap, I CAN’T WAIT!

I thought the Durazo is a decent player, I wonder if another team will pick him up

He WAS a decent player. It's past tense. Maybe he will be again, but right now he hasn't fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. He still can't play first base. I think someone else will pick him up, but if he's hoping for anything more than a minor league contract, he'll probably be disappointed. I think the Rangers are going to try to resign him to a minor league deal after he has a chance to shop around.
