Adam Dunn is Not the Answer

Newsflash, America, the Reds are once again an awful, awful baseball team. When your club is so bad they can’t even compete in the drudgery that is the NL Central, then not only is it time to abandon ship, it’s time to start selling assets like you’re Ken Lay at a pre-crash Enron. Therefore, we all once again eagerly await one of the time-honored and favorite parts of the baseball season-- figuring out which silver-tongued GM is going to screw the Reds for the best players this year?+

You see, despite the team being so wretched, there are still solid pieces playing for Cincinnati. However, one of them is not Adam Dunn. For some reason, people tend to think positively of an ox that hits almost exclusively in the most prolific hitters park west of Fenway. Because of this, ludicrous questions still persist in my area of the world such as: “Is Dunn is the answer to the New York Yankees continual 1st base needs?” The answer? No, no, and more no.

The local Fox affiliate here in New York has a thing they do nightly that says “It’s 10 PM, do you know where your children are?” Adam Dunn is similar, except “it’s 9:00 PM, do you know that Adam Dunn just struck out again?

Have you ever seen a mentally challenged person eat something they're not supposed to? Like a wooden dowel or some paste? No one wants to say anything to correct them, because that would be impolite, and outside of myself, we are a compassionate society that frowns on gestures such as that. So instead all the people just stand there and stare, mouths agape, wondering what exactly caused God to favor some and not others. The MCP (not to be confused with OPP, the OCP, or WCC++) sees this attention, and instead of wondering "why the fuck are these people staring at me," his face morphs into an ecstatic grin and starts clapping his hands with delight. According him or her, attention is good, no matter where it comes from. It's a similar feeling that comes from defecating oneself, or blogging, which in some quarters is precisely the same thing.

This is what Adam Dunn looks like when he's trying to field a ground ball hit to the 1st baseman. The ball bounces, Dunn does his little retard-clap, the ball bounces off his chest, and in an ultimately futile effort to make a routine play for nearly all 60 starting 1B's in the MLB and AAA, he kicks the ball off into the 1st base dugout. Before you know it, Dontrelle Willis is cruising his way onto 3rd base, flashing gang signs, and calling himself Daisuke Mastublacka. Jason Giambi looks like Keith freaking Hernandez compared to Adam Dunn.

Did I forget to mention that Dunn is hitting a better-than-career-average .250 right now, and that his career OPS is only marginally better than the league average at his position? New York, or any team for that matter, would have to overpay drastically for a guy who is really not all that good.

So, a Dunn fan might say, why not put him at DH? Because New York already has 6, the majority of them are injured, and the team doesn't need any more. Besides, I know we've all moved on from the concept of using batting average as the metric for player evaluation. But don’t you want someone who generally hits northward of the Mendoza line? Next thing you know, you'll be advocating for Andruw Jones, and that guy has the Mendoza line installed in his house.

Dunn reminds me a little bit of that fictional player that appeared in the commercials for MLB '06 "The Show." Remember that ad campaign? Remember those commercials? He was a black dude was playing in Osaka, Japan. Here's essentially a direct quote from memory:

"People in Osaka don't care about hits, RBI's. They care about the long ball. I'm not a ball player, I'm an entertainer!!" The guy had an absurd stat line of like .196 AVG 32 HR 39 RBI. That's basically what we'll get with Adam Dunn. I'll ask any and all baseball teams to stay as far as bloody possible away from him, and that does double for the Yankees. If NY traded for Dunn, they would be the ones who are mentally challenged.

+ My money’s on Ned Colletti. He’s like Jim Bowden, only dumber, and Bowden pulled off the mother of all hose jobs last year. You can’t even rip guys off like that in fantasy baseball.

++ Also known as "Harvard on the Hudson.”

How about that! A post here in its complete entirety! Is it a good thing for any first baseman to be favorably compared to the defensive prowess of "Call Me" Keith Hernandez?

I can think of a lot of questions that Adam Dunn can be the answer for...

Who should the Reds have traded to Washington instead of a lightly less crappy Austin Kearns? Who will lead the league in strikeouts a record number of times? Who's the the second most overrated outfielder for the Reds? (First is Junior, of course) Who will be the first player ever with a 200:1 strikeout to walk ratio? Who will never have his name used in the "favorite player" stats at the Little League World Series?

Dunn's the answer, Slick. You just aren't asking the right questions =)

Griffey Jr. has been an asset to MLB, plays the game hard (& clean) and has been SOL in terms of injuries. Seems a little hard to call this guy "overrated" considering all of the above and never complaining about his ill fortune.

How did I know that that little Jr. aside would get trounced on. I live in Central Ohio where the baseball world is split between Reds and Indians fans. Every freaking year Reds fans go on and on about how Griffey's going to hit 50 home runs this year. He's not, he's going to have a harder time playing 50 games. His body is not made to be a major league ball player. If you can't round third without coming up lame, you're not one of the all time greats. He may be a decent hitter and a good fielder, but he doesn't have the physical makeup to support it. Therefore to consider him a great player is overrating him.

You're going to get a lot of flak for the Cpcp...I disagree with you as well, but just know, you're going to get a lot...even in his 8 full years (pretty much excluding his injury plagued reds career), he was flat out dominant...dominant... he's a sure fire HoFer and if that's not an all time great, than what is?

Oh, no! Not flak! I don't care if people disagree with me. I don't think Baby Griffey is a hall of famer, let alone a surefire one. He hasn't helped the Reds one bit in going on seven years. The best the Reds have finished in the NL Central is 2nd and that was his first year there. They've been in fifth three times. I don't think players should be considered great for what they could have been if it wasn't for those darn injuries. I think the entire career should be considered. He was one of baseballs best for a length of time as you pointed out, but to still consider him one of baseball's best is way out in left field. (A place Jr. might play if he could stay off the DL long enough.)

CPCP are you serious. Do you have any idea what you area talking about? By that logic Sandy Koufax wasnt the greatest left hander ever because he retired due to arthritis. Gale Sayers wasnt that good either. What about Gehrig? Want me to keep going. Injuries happen and sometimes you cant help it. Griffey was far and away THE BEST PLAYER of the 90s. He was the reason that a lot of people got turned on to the game. He alwayslooked like he was having fun and everything came so naturally to him. And if you noticed, he always go injured trying to make plays. To say that he is a not one of hte greats due to a rash of injuries isnt just inane, but also idiotic. Get a clue. That was a rediculous statement.

Look, every sports fan has players they just don't like. A-Rod is most people's, Griffey is mine.

His injuries didn't all come from making plays. I saw him pull up lame going around third twice in person at two different games.

I agreed that he was good with Seattle, but he hasn't been an asset to the Reds which accounts for half of his career. You aren't reading what I'm writing. I'm saying he's overrated now.

I did read and you didnt say that. You said he wasnt a graeet player. Just because you hate the guy becaue he has done nothign for the reds doesnt mean he is less of a player. I hate Arod but I acknowledge that he is one hella good player. Griffey right now isnt really rated. When he plays he is fantastic. Great glove and a solid 290 guy with a lot of pop in his bat. Is he Vlad right now, no. Is he on the level of A Bonds, no. To say that he isnt a great player for his career is foolish.

Dunn walks 100 times a year, his OBP is high. Let's see...Dunn in the American League, hitters park, likely to have his offensive numbers go up because he doesn't have to worry about defense, sounds alot like David Ortiz to me?

David Ortiz didnt have power or anythign till he got to Fenway. Kind of funny huh. Changing leagues does not equate to being able to make contact better or having a better batting average. Adam Dunn will be nothing more then Dave Kingman at best till he realizes that hitting hte ball 500 feet verses 400 feet still only equals one run. And I dont think that will happen. He has become so full of himself and bought into the Country Strong garbage that they say on ESPN that he will continue to strike out and makes no efferts to try and improve himself as a player.

With that said ed, he still has plenty of time to learn...ortiz didn't become a legit hitter until his very late 20s...and he didn't switch leagues, just parks (you didn't say leagues, i know)...

That might be the case, however Ortiz was a productive hitten when given a chance in Minnasota. Never had the power numbers but was a conssitant 270-280 hitter who didnt strike out nearly as much as Dunn. in addition he never had the playing time that Dunn has had in his career. Dunn has had every oppurtunity to get better and never has. Shoot, you can almost make the case that he has regressed as a player since he first started his career. Not only has his OPS gone down almost every year so has his slugging.

No you're right, but Dunn could become a better hitter in a different situation...its so easy to hit homers in cincinnati, that he just does it all the time (and maybe feels he has to)... Personally, i think a change of scenery...and coaching, would help

Have you ever noticed how a lot of people try to say certian people could and more often then not they dont live up to that billing. A trend has been established. I dont think he can change that no matter who he plays for. He needs to completely change his attitude towards hitting and hitting singles isnt as glamorous as the long ball. To quote Nike and Greg Maddux, Chicks dig the long ball.

Yes...I guess my thought is that perhaps a change of scenery, teams, coaches and expectations could alter his approach...but if he stays in cinci...barring a marjor overhaul with him remaining...he'll never be better than a .250 hitter with 40 home runs...

To gather some perspective I checked baseball-reference.com to get an idea of who were the most similar batters to Dunn thru age 26. Here is the list in order: Strawberry, Canseco, Reggie Jax, Glaus, Brunansky, Maris, Colavito, Killebrew, Conigliaro, B.Powell.

That's because nobody has 200+ HR before their 26th birthday, save Pujols, Arod, Jr Griffey and a few others. To be similar to Strawberry at age 26 is quite an accomplishment. That isn't a shabby list to be on, that's for certain.

Dunn OPS only slightly better than an average LF? You want to back that up? Dunn has the 5th best OPS right now as a LF.

In 2006? 9th. In 2005? 3rd. 2004? 3rd.

In fact, since 2003, the list of outfield OPS goes Manny, Vlad, Jim Edmonds, Bay, Derminae Dye, and then Adam Dunn.

And oh yeah, Dunn is 27 years old

And if you really want to have a serious discussion about the state of the Nationals currently, and the state of the Reds, pre-trade vs. post-trade...I'm more than welcome to entertain your thoughts. And afterwards, maybe you'll understand the intricacies of the way baseball actually works
