Born on October 10, 1868 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ad Gumbert (Addison Courtney Gumbert) played for the Chicago White Stockings, Boston Reds, Chicago Colts, Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Bridegrooms and Philadelphia Phillies over the course of his 9 year career. Gumbert broke into the bigs on September 15, 1888 with the Chicago White Stockings, and put up a 3.62 ERA in 246.1 innings pitched in 1889, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Ad Gumbert's best season was 1892, when he posted a 3.41 ERA, won 22 games and struck out 118 batters.
