A start to reMaineber

A quick flip-flop in the rotation ended up with John Maine's first NL win, a complete game 4-hit shutout. Maine was in control all night throwing 98 pitches, 67 for strikes. With the help of Cliff Floyd's leaping catch in the fifth to rob Chris Burke and Carlos Beltran's outfield assist to throw out Munson at home, Maine kept the Astros off the board. Willie Randolph had swapped El Duque and Maine in the rotation due to the possibility of rain (the start of the game was delayed 54 minutes by rain) and it couldn't have turned out better.

The Mets offense hit their fifth grand slam in two weeks. This time it was Jose Valentin, his 2nd in two weeks, in the 2nd inning off Taylor Buchholz. Carlos Delgado added a two-run shot in 5th to back Maine's performance.

The Mets improved to 58-38 with the win and lead the NL East by 13 games.

I think I could beat the Astros if I took the mound today. They're playing an absolutely deplorable level of baseball. If you can even call it baseball anymore. In 2000, they were among the absolute worst teams in baseball in the first half, but a much-improved second half allowed them to finish with 72 wins. The Astros could match that if they go just 26-48 the rest of the season. And I certainly wouldn't put that kind of recor past them, considering their 3-6 start to the second half. Phil Garner is also well on his way to proving that he is one of the worst managers in the history of baseball. Before he came to Houston, he only had one winning season in 11 years as a professional manager. He had finished in second place only once, and finished lower than third more than half the time at 7. His record, including this season, in a season following his first full season with an MLB team is 181-241 (.429). What's worse is what a nose-dive that is from his record with teams during his first full season (260-226, .535). True, he's had some stinky teams in the past, but this shows clear as day that teams get WORSE when Garner's there. The man's a train wreck. Unfortunately, the Astros brass couldn't see that he was riding the shoulders of Clemens, Oswalt and Pettitte in getting to the World Series last year and gave him a COMPLETELY unwarranted contract extension, so they won't dump him as soon as they should. The Astros are going to have to rebuild like after the 80's. It's gonna be terrible for Astros fans. This team has totally lost my support. Astros, you disgust me.

Sorry, they actually have to go 26-38, not 26-48. That would be a .402 winning percentage for the second half, but for the season their win percentage would be .444, well above Garner's career average in second full seasons with a team. I think they can do it.
