A new contender in the AL ROTY race

14

by user Drpatriot

As the midseason draws to a close, we begin to look at new players rising up on the rosters of various teams in baseball. One such star, rookie Jon Lester, is rising quickly in the AL East with one of the best opening records ever by a Red Sox pitcher. Lester has played excellently so far. The question is: will he continue to play well? And if he does, could he eventually earn the crown of AL ROTY?

To answer this question, I compare Lester's current stats with fellow rookie Francisco Liriano's first eight starts. (Liriano is currently considered a frontrunner for the AL ROTY candidacy.)

Player Record IP H ER ERA
Jon Lester 5-0 45.1 36 12 2.38
Francisco Liriano 7-1 44.0 24 8 1.64

It appears that Liriano clearly has better stats during this time period. However, the fact remains that Lester still has not lost a game. If Liriano has a drop in stats, Lester could conceivably climb past him in ERA. Though at this point it appears that a ROTY award is unlikely, keep your eye on Jon Lester.

But don't put it past the voters to choose an east coast player over a small market midwest team's player.

I really don't think that will be a factor. Last year Huston Street won over Robinson Cano. In 2004 it was Bobby Crosby. In 2003 is was Angel Berroa. In fact, the last time someone from a major market in the east won was Rafael Furcal in 2000. The last time it happened in the AL was Nomar Garciaparra in 1997. Since 1997, it's been Ben Grieve (Oakland), Carlos Beltran (Kansas City), Kazuhiro Sasaki (Seattle), Ichiro Suzuki (Seattle), Eric Hinske (Toronto), and then the other three I just named. I think when it comes to Rookie of the Year, I think the voters have been more reliable than other awards.

Wow, I just realized how much Oakland has dominated the ROY category the last 20 years. Since 1985, Oakland has had 6 Rookies of the Year. Second place is the Kansas City Royals with three. That's impressive.

My favorite, though, is probably the Los Angeles Dodgers. They won ROY five years in a row (1992-1996) and all but one turned out to be pretty mediocre. Piazza is the one that didn't. Aside from him, you have Eric Karros in '92, Rual Mondesi in '94, Hideo Nomo in '95, and Todd Hollandsworth in '96.

The voters would never choose Lester over his teammate Johnathon Papelbon.

I highly doubt they would even pick Papelbon. I think Liriano is going to win it, hands down.

He's also right. As it stands right now, Liano doesn't get the award.

The difference b/w Lester and Papelbon is control. Lester has a hell of a lot more walks and a higher whip than Liriano. Lester has shown some bright spots and will be a good pitcher. I think there will be some bumps ahead though.

Not JUST walks, though. Look at the numbers posted here. Lester has allowed 12 more hits in just 1.1 more innings.

How about Jered Weaver? He's not getting much attention but his stats are killer.

Jered will show up in the picture as long as he keeps doing what he's doing. Give him 4 more starts and I think we'll have a better picture of where he stands in the ROY picture. If he goes 4-0, look out - if he starts faltering East Coast bias should prevail over Weaver or Lirano.

But, after putting up what I put up, how on earth can you talk about an East Coast bias? Five of the last nine Rookies of the Year have come from the west coast (Oakland an Seattle). Two of them came from the mid-west (Kansas City). How are you gonna complain about an east coast bias with the recent history of ROY winners?

I think most people, even the East Coast media, realize how good Liriano has been. He is not only the best AL rookie, an argument can be made that he is the best pitcher in the league right now. Unless he takes a huge dive, I think Lirino will win it. If any Red Sock should be in the discussion, it's Papelbon. I don't think Lester has played enough to even consider him. Liriano has pitched in 24 games and Lester just 8.

True that they've recognized Liriano. Seriously, with all the press he's been getting, I don't know how people can complain about the bias against small-market teams in the mid-west. Seriously, you just sound ridiculous talking like that when the only thing I hear anyone talking about in the sports world right now is Detroit, Chicago, and Liriano. That said, I don't think number of games played will be as much of a factor as innings pitched, and as it stands, Lester has pitched more innings.

Sorry, that's wrong. I was going on the numbers posted here, and I guess the writer was only giving their numbers as starters. Liriano has actually pitched almost 60 innings more than Lester altogether.

The writer was comparing both pitchers' first 8 starts. An unfair comparison, if I do say so myself. While Lester has gotten his career off to a great start, Liriano has been pitching at this level all season.

Liriano is well in the lead for AL rookie of the year. At this point, it is his to lose. Depending on how the season plays out for Santana and Halladay, he has an outside chance of taking the AL Cy Young award as well.

Papelbon will be the leading candidate for this award as long as the stay atop their division. He has had much more of an impact on his team than Liriano has had.

I disagree Manny. If you have two excellent rookies (coin flip situation) and one of them played an instrumental role in leading his team to a division title and the other one did not, who would you pick? That's right - the instrumental guy (Papelbon in this case).

It's all relative. The Red Sox are still a good team without Papelbon. The Twins were playing horribly until Liriano was moved into the rotation. Without him, the Twins might still be behind Cleveland. The Twins are a worse team than the Red Sox. Liriano has made the Twins more better than Papelbon has made the Red Sox. Both are superb pitchers, though, and you couldn't go wrong with either. But what is the cutoff for qualifying as a rookie? Papelbon did pitch quite a bit last year.

It's the close third that I really don't get. How can you say that Papelbon is so far behind Liriano, but Lester is so close to Papelbon? If Papelbon is a distant second, Lester should also be a distant third, because he hasn't done nearly as much as Papelbon has to this point.

Plus, I'm not sure how Lester would even be in 3rd at this point... Justin Verlander's been pretty darn good as well.
