A class act

Just to point out that, when I was contradicting the fellow who said A-Rod was a far better player than Jeter, I did not mean to demean A-Rod, I'd like to point out that he's proving to be the kind of classy player the Yankees want and need:

Yesterday the Yanks beat the White Sox 8-1 and got 5 home runs, but A-Rod went 0 for 4, and surely was disappointed that he didn't get his 500th to add to the bunch. His main comment: "We've been swinging the bats incredibly well, and you kind of just want to join the parade a little bit, but, again, the most important thing here is to win."

That is class. That is a TEAM player. That is a REAL YANKEE.

I was at the game yesterday and I finally figured out why's its so freakin hard to reach milestones. Every at bat, hundreds of flash's pop during your swing. How can one concentrate on hitting a homerun this way? I think he'll break it in an away game. So he can actually see where the ball is.

When you're away though, you've got to contend with the booing? Or is that only Bonds?

Eh...A-Rod probably gets booed more than the average player...

All away team players (with a few exceptions and depending on the timing...like cal at the end of his career) get booed at away games...

He probably gets booed less than bonds though...easily

I think that COULD be a reason, Insan, but I disagree. I think the main reason why A-Rod is not getting his 500th homer is because of the milestone. I mean, you get kinda nervous when you're up there, and EVERY swing that ARod will take between now and when he reaches the milestone is going to be a BIG swing for the fences. Many people think who want to achieve milestones think too much about it. They just have to go up there preteding like there are no stats that are in your mind, and do what you do best...

Yea nervousness is another factor, I agree. As for visiting ballparks, you only get booed when they introduce you and at your first at bat. After that it's pretty quiet comparitively speaking. Unless you're widely hated by everyone like Bonds. A-Rod isn't that hated, especially since half the league is pursuing him in the offseason.

I was at Camden Yards last weekend and the flash bulbs were just as bad...then again, Camden Yards turns into Yankee Stadium South during yankees series

That's what I like about a player: when he thinks about his team more than himself, or at least makes the press/public think that he does. With one home run away from his 500th home run, of course he's going to think about his 500th home run every single time he's up to bat, but to say something like that and exclude the situation he's in (1 homer shy of an elite club), THAT is a class act.

A-Rod is the most scrutinized player in American sports taoday. More than Bonds, more than LeBron, more than Tiger. As much I think A-Rod is somewhat cheesy and contrived, the class and composure he's shown in dealing with the over-the-top, excessive, "What the hell is wrong with NYC?" abuse that he's received has been nothing short of amazing. Anyone who says that A-Rod is not mentally strong is out of their damn mind!

These comments are very new. He didn't do this before. He's finally learning how to handle the New York media. Before it was "Jeter won't let me sleep over anymore :'-(" and taking off his shirt in central park and stuff like that. Now he's getting it down. If only he can come through when he's need most, the playoffs...

One of the things I would like to see happen, believe it or not, is for ARod to get a World Series ring, whether he's on the Yankees or not. He deserves one, for all the criticism he's got and all of the numbers he has produced.

A lot of people have deserved rings and never got them, its part of the game. I'm not saying its his fault he doesn't have one, but lets let the pieces fall where they may.

Arod has slumps just like all players it just hapens to be around hr 500 and being stckon 499 is irony but he is a great player maybe even the greatest of all time when his career is over. he will snap out of it sooon.

Yeah, he'll slump out of it as soon as he hits that 500th home run. It's a lot of pressure.
