A Thank You to Don Imus

I just read an expression of thanks from Nike regarding Imus ' ignorant comments directed towards Rutgers women's basketball team. It's probably the best approach I've seen and worth sharing:

Nike

Thank you, ignorance.

Thank you for starting the conversation.

Thank you for making an entire nation listen to the Rutgers team's story. And for making us wonder what other great stories we've missed.

Thank you for reminding us to think before we speak.

Thank you for showing us how strong and poised 18- and 20-year-old women can be.

Thank you for reminding a sports nation that another basketball tournament goes on in March.

Thank you for showing us that sport includes more than the time spent on the court.

Thank you for unintentionally moving women's sport forward.

And thank you for making all of us realize that we still have a long way to go.

Next season starts 11.16.07

This is an interesting take from Nike. Im glad that at they were able to find some light out of all this.

Thank you for giving the talk shows and news stations this to talk about when they could've been talking about something interesting that people actually give a damn about. Luckily for us this garbage has almost passed and we'll all be able to forget about it soon.

Thank you for unintentionally moving women's sports forward? How does the public portrayal of African-American women athletes as hos move women's sports forward. Holy crap, is that a dumb stance to take. More people are not going to watch college basketball because of those statements. It didn't draw more interest in the game, just more interest in the public spectacle of Don Imus. Geez, what a dumb stance to take. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
