It has been a busy day for the NFL and its fan after reports surfaced that Michael Vick would indeed be pleading guilty to conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture. In an effort not to be outdone though by the NFL, NCAA football had it's own players cross paths with the law.
Following the arrest of Iowa Hawkeyes sophomore wide receivers Dominique Douglas and Anthony Bowman on Sunday, the team suspended both players indefinitely. Both players were arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a credit card. Dominique Douglas led the Hawkeyes in receptions (49) and receiving yards (654) last year. He was charged with making more than $2,000 in purchases to credit cards belonging to two other people. No word on what was purchased but I can guarantee you that it wasn't gifts for their mothers. Anthony Bowman, who did not accumulate any stats last year, is thought as an accomplice at this point in the investigation. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz announced on today the two wideouts would not participate in any team activities. A good start to the season, especially considering they finished last year with a record of 6-7.
Not to be outdone however, two West Virginia Mountaineers were arrested over the weekend and charged with transferring and receiving stolen property. James Thomas, a redshirt freshman linebacker, whose father played linebacker for the Mountaineers from 1994-95 and Ellis Lankster, a cornerback who transferred from Jones County Junior College, apparently stole a computer according to a local dispatcher. Both players had been practicing with the first team and were competing for starting jobs on the 3rd ranked team in the country. Mountaineers head coach Rich Rodriguez released a statement Sunday saying he was aware of the incident and that a decision would be made regarding the two athletes once more facts were presented.
