Once again, the Beavers come into a season with little to no acknowledgement. This year, the Beavers will be lead by junior forward Sasa Cuic. Aside from Cuic, the Beavers are going to be the youngest team in the PAC-10. Coach Jay John will look to start two highly recruited in-state brothers from Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. Josh Tarver, the older of the two will play in his first year with the Beavers this season, as last season he was forced to red shirt due to a foot injury. His younger brother Seth Tarver, will likely start right along side his bigger brother to for quite a dynamic back court.
Returning to the starting lineup are two of last years break-out players. Kyle Jeffers will start and lead the team at the center position, while highly athletic and smooth Marcel Jones will start at forward along side captain Cuic. These three experienced players will have to teach the younger players the ropes of the PAC-10. Not in the starting lineup at the start of the season is another very highly recruited player that coach John managed to keep in-state. 6-foot-3 freshman shooting guard Lathen Wallace (Clackamas, Ore./Jefferson HS) was an all-state first team member last year, averaging more than 24 points a game. He will be looked upon to contribute off the bench.
The Beavers certainly have their work cut out for them in the 2006-2007 season, but the young team is excited and ready to give it their all. With that said, do not be suprised if the Beavers are a team people are talking about come late February. If the teams preforms as capable, it will be the first year back to the tournament since 1990 where the Beavers lost by one point to Ball State.
