A Plead to Omar Minaya: No White Sox Please!

by user Dmarine40

(From MetsLifer.com) Adam Rubin of the Daily News wrote an article this morning talking about Omar Minaya preparing for the White Sox's Fire Sale. Too which I reply, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

This has Victor Zambrano for Scott Kazmir written all over it. Whether you want Buehrle or Contreras, neither are the stellar pitcher the Mets would hold onto for years to come. Why would you give up a Pelfrey, Humber, or even Milledge for starters who have proven to be unreliable?

How soon we forget Contreras pitching for the Yankees. Ahem, choke much?

Right now the starting pitching looks to be back on track. John Maine and Oliver Perez are pitching well. Tom Glavine will be less than stellar, but fine for the playoffs. El Duque looks to be back to his old form.

That leaves Jorge Sosa, who pitched wonderfully last night, but I realize he's not the guy you want to rely on for clutch wins. Pedro Martinez should be back after the All Star break and if he jumps back into the rotation we really don't need another starter right now.

If Omar can land a Dontrelle Willis, Carlos Zambrano, or Roy Oswalt, then by all means do it. These are young guys who can be relied on for the next 5 years. Don't give up potential All Star prospects, for aging pitching just to help us over the next 3 months.

It's not worth it.

Milledge for Buerhle isn't Kazmir/VZ. Not even close. Buerhle is arguably the best player available out there; VZ was junk even then. The 2007 Mets are (obviously) contenders; the 2004 Mets were marginal at best.

I have to ask you this? Do you watch baseball at all? Buerhle unreliable? You should be lucky to have him on your roster. If you want to say that you dont want him because he is in his final year, fine. I can accept that as a viable reason. To say that you dont want him because he is unreliable is insane. He is more reliable then any pitcher you ahve on your roster right now. He is a lefty that will give you 200+ innings every year. Never misses starts. Since he has become a starter, he has only had one year that he had an era below 4.15 and only twice has he had an era below 4. Tell me what is unreliable about a pitcher that has an career era of 3.8 in the AL? And if I saw right, his era of 3.39 would be a welcomed addition to your bullpen. So if you want to criticize trading for him because you dont like the thought of a rent a player, fine. No arguments. However look up the facts before you try and make an argument about someone before you try and label them as unreliable.

PS Buerhle is only 28. My god. Do youlook up anything before you write something. I have to agree with taking oswalt though. He is amazing. The other two are hit or miss. Willis is over rated and has been declining in terms of numbers for a few years now.

Agreed, saying Buerhle is not stellar is ridiculous. Check out his stats.

Buerhle's stats are good. I'll give you that. But if you were to say you wanted a starting pitcher to help anchor your staff for the next 5 or 6 years, Buerhle wouldn't even be in the top 20. All I'm saying is don't give up Pelfrey or Humber for Buerhle. It's not worth trading that potential. Plus Buerhle is going to bolt for St. Louis in another year anyway.

You are making hte assumption that Pelfrey will be as good as Buerhle. Like I said earlier, if you dont want to give up potential because he will bolt after the year, fine. I can accept that. he might be the most underrated pitcher in baseball. He is Tom Glavine except in the American league. And for the record, potential gets people fired. you are talking about keeping a guy that might or might not be a very good pitcher. Buerhle already is and can anchor a staff for another god 5-7 yeras like your looking for. And he is hte type of pitcher that doesnt get hurt or break down.

Make a list of 20 pitchers you would want over his that fill your requirements and also remail healthy. No point in adding the likes of pitchers that break down all the time. He would be in my top 20 for sure. Guarentee you that.

Personally I feel that not enough people give Buerhle his due. after watching the guy pitch for almost 7 years, I love the way he deals.

It's okay Ed- as long as you know deep down that he is a good man and a good player that's all that matters- don't worry about everyone else

Biggest concern with Buerhle is the number of hits he allows more than 1 an inning because he does not strike a lot of people out. He's a groundball pitcher who needs a good defense behind him.

The hits he gives up is due to the style of pitcher he is. He is a come at hte batter and dare them to hit him. He is fearless. He is a ground ball pitcher, but he also induces abunch of double plays either. He doesnt walk alot neither. His hits are up, but his walks arent many so it balances out.

Oh come now. Why should the Phillies be selfish and be the only team that trades with the White Sox from the NL East. Lets spread some of this joy around. Mets are up next!
