A Letter to Favre

Dear Mr. Brett Favre,

Over these past two decades, you have amazed me and all of us Packer fans. You have become one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game while leading Green Bay to annual playoff finishes, two NFC titles, and a Super Bowl Victory. You have done it all at age 37.

It appears that you are debating whether to retire or to continue playing. Everybody has their two cents on this matter so I hope it won’t bother you too much if I add mine.

Please return number 4.
Please return number 4.

I think that you should play at least one more year. I understand if your family would want you to retire. If they really, really want you to do so, then by all means do it. However, if they are behind you coming back then don't retire.

Look, it’s clear that you can still play. Throughout the year, I've seen you run around like some 24 year old rookie. You still have a cannon for an arm, delivering the ball with great velocity, leaving no doubt in my mind that you still have some football left inside of you. However, unlike last year, you got some other guys who can play too. Rookie wide receiver Greg Jennings proved a lot this year along with pro bowler Donald Driver. Maybe with the addition of free agent tight end like Tony Gonzalez you would have a really formidable receiving corps. Remember of lot of the struggles for this year’s team was in the red zone. Gonzo would certainly improve that and the front office is targeting him this off-season. Your offensive line is improving too. They started THREE rookies on the line unheard of in the NFL. I am sure they will be better next year for they continued to improve since that horrible season opening shutout loss to the Bears. With the possible addition of Marshawn Lynch in the upcoming draft or trading up to getAdrian Peterson, it seems clear that the running game will be better. The Pack lacks the big name guy at running back, but tailback by committee with Ahman Green, Vernand Morecny, and a draft choice will certainly be adequate with an improving offensive line. The defense is also improving. Didn’t you watch the game against Chicago?

It is clear that this team has a bright future. While was just 8-8, the Pack doubled its wins from a year ago, and winning its last four games with a dominating win over the number one NFC team. With another solid draft class and maybe a couple of additions in free agency this is a team that can contend for a Super Bowl in a weak NFC. With the improvement of this year’s rookies and second year players along with new free agents this team won’t just be hoping to reach the playoffs, they will be a viable Super Bowl contender out of the weak NFC. Maybe you’ll lose in the big game, but you never know.

A year ago you were quoted in saying that this was the most talented team that you’ve ever played on. So, why don't you use the developing talent for another year in the quest for a Super Bowl appearance?

Yours truly,

            Joey Kaufman (a.k.a. The Beast)

Favre needs to retire. Should have retired about 5 years ago. He is a shell of what he use to be.

Maybe, but Favre is better than the current Number 2 QB for Green Bay, so while he is the best we have he should play. It's not like Yzerman with the Red Wings when we already had Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lang etc. that had overtaken him. Favre is still our Number 1. I think he should go one more year with the "talented team" he mentioned in pre-season, and help them improve. And what better coach for Rodgers, or whoever the Number 2 becomes. Favre should be asked to help him out for when he does retire, i.e. give him advice and suchlike.

I gave you a "-" because Favre isn't a shell of what he use to be. He isn't as good, but he doesn't have the O-line and running game in which he use to have.

Favre has aged, he has slowed and he cant throw that 100 mph ball. However, (Steven A Style)he is a far cry from a shell of what he was. Even as an grizzled vet Favre is a better QB than those in Detroit, Oakland, His backup in GB, Cleveland, Arizona, Minnesota, Chicago and San Fran. Favre still has plenty left in the tank. His team in GB is horrible. If Favre can take a bad team to 8-8 just imagine what he could do with some talent around him

He's obviously not as good as he was, but he is still a solid NFL QB. One who is average. He's not the Tom Brady level now, but he isn't David Carr or Aaron Brooks. On Madden, I'd say he's an 83 overall.

I'd go for more like 85 on the Madden scale.

A shell??? No, maybe the team is a shell of its self but not Favre. Incase you forgot this is how Favre has always played he has just always had someone there to get it. He is getting that back now. Come back for 2 more years and go out in Elway style. Take out the Colts next year and just for the taste of it take out the Broncos in 2009. Then retire......

Isn't it funny that I ran across this page 400+ days after it was posted and the comments entered. I guess Mr. Favre is not a shell of his past seasons. I guess the beast was right. Now, after his record breaking 2007 season, Favre really is going to retire. For 16 years I have watched him develop. Watched his mistakes. Watched his sometimes amazing plays. What impresses me the most is his constant team approach to the game and his joy in just playing the game. He does not say "I" won the game, its "we". He is respectful and professional to the fans and the media. Whether he throws bad passes or interceptions, he always gave us the legitimate hope of winning the game. Because, he could. His play made his team play better than they were. I greatly thank him and respect him for that. My two sons grew up knowing only Brett Favre as the quarterback for the GB Packers. Now he is gone. I guess all three have grown from boys playing a game to adults who really enjoy the game.
