Dear Mr. Brett Favre,
Over these past two decades, you have amazed me and all of us Packer fans. You have become one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game while leading Green Bay to annual playoff finishes, two NFC titles, and a Super Bowl Victory. You have done it all at age 37.
It appears that you are debating whether to retire or to continue playing. Everybody has their two cents on this matter so I hope it won’t bother you too much if I add mine.
I think that you should play at least one more year. I understand if your family would want you to retire. If they really, really want you to do so, then by all means do it. However, if they are behind you coming back then don't retire.
Look, it’s clear that you can still play. Throughout the year, I've seen you run around like some 24 year old rookie. You still have a cannon for an arm, delivering the ball with great velocity, leaving no doubt in my mind that you still have some football left inside of you. However, unlike last year, you got some other guys who can play too. Rookie wide receiver Greg Jennings proved a lot this year along with pro bowler Donald Driver. Maybe with the addition of free agent tight end like Tony Gonzalez you would have a really formidable receiving corps. Remember of lot of the struggles for this year’s team was in the red zone. Gonzo would certainly improve that and the front office is targeting him this off-season. Your offensive line is improving too. They started THREE rookies on the line unheard of in the NFL. I am sure they will be better next year for they continued to improve since that horrible season opening shutout loss to the Bears. With the possible addition of Marshawn Lynch in the upcoming draft or trading up to getAdrian Peterson, it seems clear that the running game will be better. The Pack lacks the big name guy at running back, but tailback by committee with Ahman Green, Vernand Morecny, and a draft choice will certainly be adequate with an improving offensive line. The defense is also improving. Didn’t you watch the game against Chicago?
It is clear that this team has a bright future. While was just 8-8, the Pack doubled its wins from a year ago, and winning its last four games with a dominating win over the number one NFC team. With another solid draft class and maybe a couple of additions in free agency this is a team that can contend for a Super Bowl in a weak NFC. With the improvement of this year’s rookies and second year players along with new free agents this team won’t just be hoping to reach the playoffs, they will be a viable Super Bowl contender out of the weak NFC. Maybe you’ll lose in the big game, but you never know.
A year ago you were quoted in saying that this was the most talented team that you’ve ever played on. So, why don't you use the developing talent for another year in the quest for a Super Bowl appearance?
Yours truly,
Joey Kaufman (a.k.a. The Beast)
