A Letter to David Stern

Dear Commissioner,

I am writing to you today not out of anger, but out of gratitude. I want to sincerely thank you for creating the NBA Draft lottery. No, I am not a fan of the Portland Trail Blazers or Seattle Supersonics, I am a Boston Celtics fan.

You are probably wondering why I would be sending you a thank you note in light of last night's events, which probably set the Celtics back another 10 years. The reason is I now no longer have to worry about finding time for Celtics games. I no longer have to worry about spending money on League Pass, or shelling out that extra 10 bucks a month to subscribe to the sports tier with NBATV on it. I can now finally watch that documentary on Hitler that always seems to coincide with an NBA game. I can take that money I would have spent on an Oden or Durant jersey and donate it to Dogs Deserve Better or another worthy charity. I can spend a little extra time watching cartoons with my kids. I don't have to worry about staying up late to watch the Celtics play on the West Coast when they go out there, because it won't matter.

Since the Celtics extended Doc Rivers' contract last week,I should have been expecting this shot to the groin area. Unfortunately, I tried to be an optimist. I watched an interview with Danny Ainge last night as he was trying not to throw up on television, and he talked about trying to trade the pick. A worthy idea in theory, however, is there really a team out there who wants the 5th pick in this draft?

We are approaching nearly two generations of fans now who no longer remember the Celtics being the elite franchise in the league, remember the NBA on CBS, remember playoff triple headers being shown on NBC, or even remember the original Dream Team. We are closing in on the basketball generation that will remember Michael Jordan as the guy who kicks Kevin Bacon's ass at trashcan basketball instead of the dominating force of the 1990's Bulls. I remember a Celtics/Lakers game this year in Boston where the crowd chanted "MVP" for Kobe Bryant. Could you even fathom that happening in the 1980's? I mean seriously, Magic or Kareem getting MVP chants in the Garden? It's like a Muslim prayer group giving Jesus a standing ovation in a mosque in Iran.

Because everyone felt that the 85 lottery was fixed, the NBA has gone to great lengths to ensure they could never be accused of that again. It was great in theory, but now that nearly 75% of the good talent is now in the Western Conference, the Knicks and Celtics are awful, the thought of another Detroit/San Antonio NBA Finals makes network executives come down with gastroenteritis, and that the majority of NBA playoffs are now on cable and have a tough time competing with VH1 Reality shows, I think it's time to shake things up a bit.

Your league, which was saved by Magic and Larry and Michael in the 1980's is coming very to close to being even more irrelevant than it already is. Oden and Durant are two "can't miss" prospects that could have been marketed for years to come, and now they are going into the basketball purgatory of the northwest, and one of them is going to a team that is trying to leave town. Fantastic. It's too bad the NHL has an incompetent commissioner who can't take advantage of this, because you are presenting them with a golden opportunity to be relevant in the USA again.

Once again, Mr Stern, thank you. Thank you for not giving the Celtics cap relief after Reggie Lewis died, even though you gave relief to teams in similar situations later on. Thank you for suspending Amare Stoudemire in game 5 against the Spurs this year and depriving fans of watching a team that can make their jump shots and keep a game interesting. Thank you for putting the playoffs mainly on cable and having gaps of three days between games. If you hadn't done all of this, I would have less time and money for other things. I hope all is continuing to flourish in "Stern-World", I hope the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, because here in the real world, the NBA is falling apart and you are doing nothing to stop it.

Sincerely,

Someone Who Used To Give a Damn About the NBA

At least you lived when your team was in their glory years. I saw my team's best season ever in 2004. I am a Wolves fan, and we have nothing. We're stuck with an incompetent GM, Ricky Avis, Mike Ames, and Aric. At least your team didn't trade Sam Cassell one year removed from being an all star for Marko Aric and sent the clippers a first rounder as well. Your team ditched Davis, Blount, and Banks and got essentially the same garbage back but with a first round pick. It stinks out in boston, but the stench is worse in minny

In the words of Bill Clinton, "I feel your pain". My team also didn't lose 5 consecutive first round picks for illegal negotiations with Joe Smith, either. On the bright side, at least you get to watch Kevin Garnett on a nightly basis...

Its tough being a TWolves fan FP, because 10 years ago I figured that to be a team that would have 1 or 2 rings or at least a few finals appereances by now. However, (Steven A. Smith) it is even painful for me to see the dismantling of the Celtics. I came around at the tail end of the Celtics glory years, and always figured they would rise again. Yet all they have done is sink farther and farther, its amazing that the NBA's most storied franchise could sink so low.

but they have some potential. Paul Pierce is a good player who is still young. We can't do anything with a top 50 player of all time, and can't trade him because McHale is a total Dumbass and would probably trade him and multiple first round picks for someone like Ricky Davis (only without any talent), and then we'd have lost the only decent player we had, and be screwed till like 2010

There is no little to no potiential in Boston. The TWolves are mired down through bad deal by McHale Ill give you that. He brought in a great player then shackled him by having no money to help anyone else out. Danny Ainge is proving to be just as bad a GM with his inability to get any legit talent around Pierce, or a solid coaching staff (sorry Doc). I can see the Twolves pulling out of there slump long before the Celtics. They will be bitching about the 07 lottery for a long time to come.

but boston will get another legitimate chance at the no. 1 pick next year. The wolves will hover around .500 to long to get any shot, have to send their pick to either LA or Boston, and then ditto 2009. KG would by almost 35 by that point, and Foye and McCants would have still been stuck without any help in developing into NBA players. So essentially, they'll have wasted 7 years of picks straight

I think this is another bullet in the chamber for my End the Draft argument. Why should Durant and Oden's fate -- and to a large degree, the direction of the NBA -- be determined by a lottery ball? Let's take Oden. If he's not NBA-ready right now, he's really close. His potential is sickeningly high. If he were a free agent, and the salary cap weren't this "soft cap" nonsense, no one would have a problem if he signed with Portland or Seattle.

I agree DNL. The lottery draft ball nonse is crazy. That should be blamed for all these problems more than anything else.

At the same time...While the lottery is incorrect, not giving bad teams good players is a bit unfair in that no one would want to go to a bad team and make them better... The concept of the lottery was than to compromise between giving the worst team the best player and letting mildly bad teams get that final player to push them up...or teams w/ a bad year to finally be ridiculous (see San Antonio '97)

JuT: The point of a salary cap is to make it so good players have to go to bad teams in order to get paid. There's no reason to have a draft if you have a salary cap.

For every Celt fan that that feels this way, I am sure there is a fan in Portland or Seattle that will be tuning in next year. And what's wrong with this draft, isn't it supposed to be the deepest in years?

Politics actually...the Owner wants a new stadium and wants the city to build it...the city doesn't want to build it and the citizens don't want taxes raised...

This team hasn't been good since the days of kemp and payton...and even then...

They love the sonics, but no one will go a see a crappy team...if durant is there, people will come and then the ball starts rolling

Keep that wishful thinking up. Unless Durant's father that's a contractor who will build an arena for free.

Maybe it's time for GMs to get creative. What about streetballers? Plenty of freeagency talent there (not to mention contract steals) Perhaps it's unorthidox, but so is the NBA in general these days...

Most of the guys in the NBA are streetballers, which is why it sucks. The days of Magic and Isiah and Kevin Johnson have been replaced by shoot first, pass last gunners like Iverson, Bryant and Marbury. Its sad, really.

I would consider blaming your front office for a lot of what happened. Since the Duncan draft of ’97, your front office has screwed the pooch on nearly every deal they’ve made. As a Blazer fan, I appreciate Danny Ainge on many levels – he played for us in our glory years and he also took Telfair off our hands for Brandon Roy. I love that man.

I forgot to include Vin Baker's binge drinking, which wasn't enough to get cap relief, or trading Antoine Walker for Raef LaFrentz, which necessitated the Blazers trade last year. It's like wrecking the car, painting it with Krylon and hoping noone notices...
