A Comparison MJ, King James, Kobe

by user Willf123

Listed below are the points, rebounds, and assists totals per game for three players in their first four years in the NBA.

pts asst reb
26.7 6.4 6.7
15.9 3.0 4.0
34.1 5.5 5.8

Any idea who the players are? I will give you a hint.....Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan. At that point in his career the 24 year old Jordan's teams were a combined 158-170 regular season and coming off a loss in five game to the Pistons in the Eastern Conference semis. Kobe Bryant was a year younger than James at all of 21. His teams were a combined 214-81 and he won his first NBA title in his 4th year. Lebron's Cavs finished this season with an identical 50-32 record as last year, a year in which the Cavs lost in the Eastern Conference semifinals in 7 games to Detroit. His teams have garnered a 177-151 record in the last 4 years.

I would compare Lebron's situation more with that of Jordan. Michael did not acquire his sidekick Scottie Pippen until that 4th year, Pippen's rookie season. He would win his 1st title 3 years later once Pippen became established an Phil Jackson had taken over the coaching duties from Doug Collins. Kobe on the other hand benefitted from having an in his prime Shaquille O'Neal and Phil Jackson. As the stats clearly show above Jordan and James were clearly the alpha dogs of their respective teams while Kobe had just broken the 20 point barrier at 22.5 in his 4th year.

Sportswriters and fans seem to lose perspective as time goes on. If James leads his Cavs to the Finals all the stories out there claiming that he is an underachiever will give way to stories saying that he is on his way to being the greatest player ever etc. The real story lies somewhere between. Anyway you view it, don't mistake this, the man is an excellent player who barring injury will someday be in the hall of fame.

One of these kids is doing his own thing...

Kobe & MJ, fair comparisons, go at it ALL NIGHT!

The only major difference 'tween the two to me: MJ wanted to destroy you in whatever you competed against him Kobe wants to be MJ

LeBron is a different beast than those two: Bigger, stronger, YOUNGER, and a polished skill set. I just hope he continues to strive for greatness and doesn't let mediocrity wear him down like Garnett.

MJ took a while to get the title, but that's why. He had to push through, his drive is incomparable to all but a few people in history. He didn't have the physical skills Kobe and LeBron have. He earned it.

Wow, I can honestly say it has never occurred to me that MJ was less talented than Kobe or LBJ. But he was cut from his HS varsity team, something that would never have happened to those other two. Interesting point (see, this is the insight we're paying you for!). Although, frankly, he took a while to win mostly because his teammates at first were Quintin Dailey, Wes Matthews, and Dave Corzine, while Kobe was instantly dropped onto a championship-caliber team, and at least Bron-Bron has had some talented teammates (Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, etc.).

That's why Jordan was the best thing for the NBA (and the worst). He could beat you one on one whether he was better than you or not. The dunk on Ewing was pure will. Every great moment was his sheer will. He was going to beat you one on one everytime.

And that's how he destroyed the game. He was a one of a kind being that everyone imitated. Can't be done, replicated or reproduced. And certainly not bettered. So all the players came along and said "I can beat you everytime" just like Mike, but they can't. So now there's a few billion two guards in the world that can beat you with a first step and can't hit a jumper... *yawns*.... awesome...

Jordan destroys Bryant in the 'going backdoor on the road without a legal scrum' department as well.

Jordan never dunked over a car in high school, but he could have put up 81 if he REALLY wanted to... Bernard King could have done it too. On a given night, under the right circumstances, scoring 81 isn't much. Hell, if Willie Burton can put up 53, anything is possible!

I think MJ was definitely less talented than Kobe or LeBron. But he had the fiercest assassin's mindset. LeBron probably falls to 3rd on that list.

I always think of Lebron as an Oscar Robertson type even though I'm too young to have seen anything other then clips on NBA TV....
