A Big Ticket in Boston

by MegECass110

"Mami, I'm good all by myself,

But I'm a force when we're together.

Mami, I'm good all by myself,

But baby you, you make me better."

~NeYo and Fabolous, "You Make Me Better"

Those words have to be running through the heads of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett this morning. I was awoken by a thunderstorm at 6:35am, and turned on the radio to hear that Minnesota and Boston have basically agreed to trade Kevin Garnett to Boston, according to ESPN.com and other sources.

This is officially the second time in my entire life that I'm legitimately excited about Celtics basketball.

Granted, the Celtics have to give up a s***load of young talent to get Garnett. Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair and a future draft pick, most likely a first rounder, will be shipped off to Minnesota along with Theo Ratliff and his expiring contract, according to Marc Stein. Three of those guys I can deal with getting rid of, but AJ is one of the best young low post scorers in the league, and his potential is tremendous. Thankfully, Rajon Rondo, the point guard of the future, is thought to be sticking around.

But with KG in his place, the Celtics have three guys who can score 30 on any given night, 20 on most nights. The biggest question will be the meshing of those three egos, especially with Pierce being the face of the franchise for the past 5 years or so. Apparently, all three guys have "signed off" on the deal and are thrilled to be playing together. It's been said the Celtics would not have made this deal if they weren't convinced they could sign KG to a contract exension, so it appears KG will be making his home in Beantown for the next 4-5 years.

Overall, they stack up near the top of the East (top 5 or 6, thrown in with Detroit, Miami, Cleveland, and Chicago). Can they win a championship within the next 3-4 years, if everyone stays relatively healthy? It's a distinct possibility.

The Boston Celtics are relevant again. And I'm pumped. Wahwahweewah.

BREAKING NEWS: The Boston Globe is reporting the latest deal is as constituted above, with Al Jefferson replaced by Ryan Gomes. So it's Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, and two first-round picks to the Timberwolves for Garnett. Sweet Jesus, Al and KG ON THE SAME TEAM?!

UPDATE: Big Al is back in the deal. So it's now Gomes, Green, Telfair, Ratliff, Jefferson and 2 first round picks. Basically every piece of young talent, with the exception of Rondo and this year's draft picks.

I know, I think I might have to get tickets for a game over Christmas break. If this actually happens.

I was wondering when the KG talks would resume. I seriously didn't think that the draft was the end. But KG to Boston? Championship? I really don't see that. You've got Allen past his prime, Pierce who wants to be center of attention, and KG who is the best player on the team who probably won't get the ball enough. It can happen but I don't see it. If they trade Pierce for KG and keep Jefferson, they're better off in my opinion.

That's all I'm saying: it can happen. This is the best chance they've had to make a run in the playoffs since 2002. It will certainly sell a ton of tickets in Boston and provide two legitmate teams to talk about in the winter, the Patriots and Celtics.

Oh definitely, sell out every night probably. I'm getting jealous of Boston, you guys have too many good teams all at once. You're supposed to have a few crappy teams... (And no hockey doesn't count)

Boston if off the basketball binge...and if you wanna see great hockey in the city you either go to Agganis Arena or Matthews Arena (that's right bitches, go huskies!)...(because Brighton & BC are not in Boston Proper...why is it called Boston College again?)

And (and i'm not expert), KG, Pierce and Ray Allen are all black...Rondo is the closest to a white guy on the team (that's any good)...soooo that really limits Boston...especially Southie...

I'm talking about the ENTIRE Boston sports scene, with front office smarts. Theo has done a good job with drafting (trades are eh), and Kraft and the gang have completely made up for all of the inefficiencies of the Celtics (like Theo, good in the draft) and the, gulp, Bruins. I have to show some college hockey love, like Justin. It is a travesty that I have never been to the Beanpot being raised in this city. It is an excellent question, as Boston College is neither in Boston or a college (it's a university).

You've never been to the Beanpot?!

Holy Crap...its the fourth best reason to binge drink in the city (the first being Paddy's day, second the marathon and third being the sox)

I think 3 years ago I was at the NU-BU beanpot final...The whole game I kept screaming at Chris Bourke..."You'll never be as good as your dad" and "Bourke Blows!" The result was Bourke scoring a game winning goal in OT and receiving Beanpot MVP honors...it was lame...thats the closest NU has coming to winning the Beanpot in my 4 years...

This year will be different...

College hockey smack? You wanna go there? I really can't talk, because BC has this extraordinary tendency to lose in the national championship game, so I'll just keep my mouth shut. But seriously, college hockey is one of the great sports that no one pays attention to. I miss it (Syracuse only has club).

BC fans are annoying, but they pale in comparison to BU fans...who disgust me...as human beings...

WEEI was saying Jefferson, Ratliff, Rondo. I don't think they mentioned Green or Telfair. But how do you feel if indeed Rondo is shipped off as well.

WEEI was saying Rondo early this morning, but they are now saying Rondo may or may not, most likely not, be a part of the deal. Marc Stein's article: http://sport...y?id=2954127, has Telfair and Green in the deal. I feel like Rondo has to stay, he has a lot of skills that can be developed into a good point guard. Plus, if he left, this is the "young talent" they would have remaining: Kendrick Perkins, Tony Allen, Ryan Gomes. That's it. Rondo has to stay.

Salarywise Telfair will be included (i think) and the t-wolves want Green as well... Green and big al are the only legit talents they get back and Rondo is developemental, he could be very good...

Hopefully they'll get him. What I meant was that they're getting a much better team to help win more games than last year (duh), and (all of the sudden) you're going to see a lot more Celtics fans or fans who denied they were Celtics fans last year come back.

Lets see if the trade goes through first. There are too many variables right now. Luckily this isn't a three or four team trade so the chances of it going through are fairly high.

The Celtics with this lineup could win the Atlantic Division in their sleep. Once the playoffs roll around, there isn't much that terrifies you either. With KG, a long playoff run is almost a certainty.

A long playoff run is not almost a certainty. They have no Center and no Point Guard. Paul Pierce has never won anything. Ray Allen is coming off double ankle surgery and hasn't won anything. KG is an old 31 and hasn't won anything. They are still being coached by Doc Rivers who has never won anything. They would also have nothing to surround them with. They wouldn't even be a Top 4 team in the EAST, which means not even in the top 10-12 in the entire league. Is that really worth trading away young pieces and submarining a rebuilding project?

I'm kidding. They are a top 6 team in the East. This team has needed veteran leadership other than Paul Pierce for the longest time. They will make the playoffs, once they get there anything can happen.
