A BCS Mess (Part one of a three part series)

10
Vote

by user Jeeves

Now that the long-awaited Michigan-Ohio State tilt is over, it is time to start sorting out the mess that is the BCS. Ohio State has locked up its place in the title game, but who will earn the right to be the national runner-up? Will USC reprise its role from last year, or will it be one of the SEC teams, Arkansas or Florida? Could we see a rematch in the title game, and see Big Blue get a second shot at the Crimson and Gray? Or will hell freeze over (making James a happy man in the process) with the Fighting Irish in the 'ship?

At this point, it's tough to say. I think odds are the Trojans will move into the driver's seat, but a lot of this is going to depend on what the voters say about Michigan's loss. Voters can either reward Michigan for playing Ohio State very closely IN Ohio State, I might add, by not dropping them that far; or, they can reward the Trojans for their win against Cal, thereby penalizing the Wolverines. As of last week's polls, Michigan held a 200-vote lead over the Trojans in the Harris Poll and about a 150-vote lead in the Coaches Poll (the Trojans are third in the Harris and fourth, behind Florida, in the Coaches). I think USC will move up to third in the Coaches Poll, at the least. Living out on the West Coast, I have a good feel for how big of a win this was, having seen both teams all year long, and I think USC will be justly rewarded for their win. I also have a sneaking suspicion that the coaches won't penalize Michigan as much as the Harris pollers will. I have no evidence for that, but it's just a hunch. That difference could potentially keep Michigan in a viable spot for the title, but that's purely speculation.

We also have to factor the computers into this mess. It's hard enough when you're just dealing with people, but things are going to change drastically in the computer rankings. Prior to this week, the comps have had a raging, mega-boner for the Wolverines. They had all first place votes from the computers, while the Rutgers Scarlet Knights(!!!) were the team favored second-most by the computers. With Michigan's loss and Rutgers' loss, who absorb all those votes?

As you can see, it's all up in the air, and until the polls are released we aren't going to know anything else. When that day comes, expect a full-blown article about it, but until then, here are some of the scenarios each school is going to have to hope for to get into the 'ship. (in order of likeliness that we will see them in the 'ship)

Ohio State Buckeyes - Need their plane to take off on time and land at the right airport.

USC Trojans - Win out. A win against Notre Dame should be enough to secure a place in the championship, unless Florida destroys ARKANSAS.

Florida Gators - Win out and hope that USC loses against UCLA or Notre Dame. If worse comes to worse, blow out Arkansas in the title game and pray that USC has two last second victories

Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Win out and put a voodoo spell on the SEC, so that Florida loses to Florida St. but beats Arkansas in the SEC title game. OR absolutely destroy USC and hope that Arkansas winning in an unimpressive fashion is enough to get into the game.

Arkansas Razorbacks - Steal the luck from the Irish, and then have my boys, UCLA, take care of USC (afterall, a Trojan is only good once) and then pound Florida into oblivion.

Rutgers - Fuh-get-about-it

Michigan - TBD determined once we find out how the plays out.

Boise State - Move to a BCS conference.

Texas - Get a time machine and make sure you don't lose a week ago.

Part 2: Does Michigan deserve a spot in the title game? (A biased and unbiased view)

Coming soon...

Part 3: Now that the polls are out, what should we expect?

In my opinion, it has to be USC if they win out. As well as Michigan played today, they won't have played nearly as difficult a schedule as USC. Granted, they will have lost to only Ohio State, which is more impressive than USC's loss to Oregon State. But, I think that overall, USC has compiled a better championship resume than Michigan. Again, that's assuming they win out. Plus, I think everyone in the country outside of Michigan would rather see Ohio State play a new opponent for the national championship. A re-match might be somewhat exciting if OSU and Michigan had played earlier in the season, but I have a hard time imagining people wanting to turn around and see a re-match of a week 13 game.

Even the Michigan fan in me agrees with you. Although the Trojans haven't been impressive in victory, they still have gotten the job done. It makes me wonder how things would have turned out had Michigan and OSU played on Labor Day a la Miami-FSU, but that's fodder for the next part.

In college football, if you don't win your conference, you (a) are not the second best team in the country, and (b) do not deserve to play for a National Championship.

This is a situation where the BCS actually "works". Last year, it didn't work. Everyone and their pet chimps knew that the two unbeaten teams should play for the title. When there is the most controversy, that's when the system is doing its thing.

Unless of course that controversy is caused by the BCS, like when Florida State made it to the title over a Miami team that they had lost to earlier in the season.

Even then it worked. This year, Rutgers beat Louisville, yet right now Louisville is ranked ahead of Rutgers. Just because you won against a team doesn't automatically mean you are better than them. If that's the case then maybe Oregon State should play for the title this year.

Not quite...Oregon State is a clearly inferior team as evidenced by their record. In 2000, the year I was referring to, Florida State was a one loss team, Miami was a one loss team, and Washington was a one loss team and they were all connected. Miami gave FSU its only loss, Washington gave Miami its only loss, while Washington fell to a worse. Also, Miami was ranked 2 in both the AP Poll and the Coaches poll, yet FSU made the championship game.

You could also look at the very next year when Nebraska made the championship game after getting plastered (62-36) by Colorado. Nebraska didn't even win its division let win its conference, yet it made it to the championship game. The BCS computers completely overrode the voters once again, as Nebraska was ranked 4th in both polls. Then you have '03 when USC was number 1 in both the AP and Coaches' poll, yet wasn't in the championship game, getting bumped by an Oklahoma team that failed to win its conference championship game.

So, the system only works when it agrees with the polls? That's not a very fair assesment.

The system is only controversial if you let it be that way. Which one loss team is better? Head to head isn't always the best indicator, see: Louisville, West Va and Rutgers. So we have a system that calculates the best teams.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm going to be gone until Sunday afternoon at the very earliest.

For the record, I'm not a fan of the current system, as I'd rather see a playoff. You can't expect teams to play their best for 12 games...heck Ohio State almost lost to Illinois.

Why does everyone disrespect the SEC? A few years back Auburn goes 13-0....they were awesome and yet thye were held out of the championship game...which is ok cuase that happened the year before (Remember LSU vs Oklahoma --> USC then split with LSU)...anyways AUburn detestroys the Wolverines and still doesn't split

Now everyone disRepects Florida. I am not seeing how USC at 3 cna lose 2 oregon state or who ever they lost to and still be #3...y don't the gators move up to 3 and not stay at 4.............y?

I also don't see hwy michigans fans think thye deserve another shot......I think the If the gators win out I think they should go....but atleast USC deserves a chot more than Michigan

Playoffs anyone?

PS the BCS loves all these messes THEY BOOST RATINGS!

how about a 12 team playoff in which the 6 major conference winners get an automatic bid, 6 wild cards, and top 4 seeded teams get a 1rrst round bye. the semi's and finals can be 3 of the four major bowls, and the fourth one can be sort of an NIT for the college football world, sound good anyone?
