ALDS Preview

FINALLY!!! The MLB playoffs are here, the days of October Football, and MLB baseball. I love this time of the year, and tomorrow may be the start of an exciting month of playoffs. The NY Yanks, once again, are in the playoffs, after having a late surge to earn the AL wild card. But, the big question surrounding the AL playoffs is can A-Rod lead the Yanks to a WS win?  And if they do beat the "Tribe", will there be another Yanks/Sox Championship Series?  Well, here is what I think.

Teams

East- Boston Red Sox

Central- Cleveland Indians

West- Los Angeles Angels

Wild Card- New York Yankees

Matchups

Los Angeles Angels versus Boston Red Sox (best of 5)

Game 1: John Lackey vs. Josh Beckett (at BOS)

-My Prediction: BOS

Game 2: Kelvim Escobar vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (at BOS)

-My Prediction: BOS

Game 3: Curt Schilling vs. Jered Weaver (at LA)

-My Prediction: LA

Game 4: undecided (at LA)

-My Prediction: BOS

Game 5: undecided (at BOS)

-My Prediction: N/A

  • The Red Sox may have cooled off, but in the playoffs the Sox only get better. The Sox have some great pitchers lined up for the first 3 games, including the potential AL Cy Young winner, in Josh Beckett. The Sox will win this series, losing just one game, mainly because of their pitching, which is much better than last year's. Big Papi, and Manny lead the Sox hitters, and are both great in the postseason.  Big Papi has a .301 BA in 38 postseason games (8 series), with 8 HR (many during clutch moments). While Manny has played in 81 postseason games (16 series), he may only have a .257 BA, but both of them together have alot of experience, and that will help out the rest of the team. LA does have Garrett Anderson, and Vlad, though, but Anderson has only played in 29 postseason games (6 series), and he has 5 HR's, with a .261 BA. Guerrero has only played in 13 games (3 series), and has just 1 HR, with a .180 BA. The BoSox have a much better pitching staff, the edge has to go to Boston. 3 games to 1.

New York Yankees versus Cleveland Indians

Game 1: Chien-Ming Wang vs. C.C. Sabathia (at CLE)

-My Prediction: CLE

Game 2: Andy Pettitte vs. Fausto Carmona (at CLE)

-My Prediction: NYY

Game 3: Jake Westbrook vs. Roger Clemens (at NY)

-My Prediction: NYY

Game 4: Paul Byrd vs. Mike Mussina (at NY)

-My Prediction: NYY

Game 5: undecided

  • Don't worry, I will make this quick and easy. Yankees win 3 games to one, bottom line here is the same as the BOS/LA series, experience. The Yanks are WAY too good for the Tribe. A-Rod has something to prove, and Jeter is still the best SS in Baseball (although Rollins is not far behind him), and the Yanks, I think, will go on to win the World Series, and that will finally shut up the A-Rod haters.  NY is the best team in MLB history, while in the playoffs. Cleveland only wins one game, because C.C. Sabathia is pitching in game one, and he is another possible Cy Young winner. Game three, I think is obvious who wins, because "The Rocket" is pitching, and this will be his final year, and he will add one more ring to his collection.  I hate to say it, but, the Yanks will be adding a 27th championship to the 26 that they already have. NY Yanks. 3 games to 1.

I am excited, because I think we will be seeing the Yanks, and BoSox in the ALCS, again!  That will be exciting, as always.  Well, i'm out, have fun watching the MLB Playoffs on TBS.

So you think that Pettitte is a better pitcher than Carmona...and that Clemens, who has barely pitched in September and has had to take cortisone shots, is going to shut down the Indians lineup...I don't see that happening.

Well, I think he does have a point. Look at Pettite's numbers in the playoffs. I believe he first in wins in a postseason career. Carmona is a good young pitcher, but he probably won't win the game for two reasons: 1) he's on and off a lot; he either does pretty good or pretty bad... 2) Fausto has no experience in the playoffs.

Sabathia is 1-7 with a 9+ ERA lifetime against the Yankees and hasn't pitched against them since 2004 because his turn has been intentionally skipped. Yet, he's going to win game one of a playoff series? And you're predicting the Red Sox will win Game four, on the road, with a pitcher named "undecided"?

Right...because what C.C. Sabathia did four years ago against a completely different lineup is totally relevant to what he'll do in one start now (after what has been easily his best season in the big leagues).

Pay attention KWitt. The Indians intentionally skip Sabathia against the Yankees because they own him. Maybe he's allergic to pinstripes, who knows. He has to pitch in the postseason because they can't skip him.

Kelsdad, I don't think they are worried about that, Sabathia is one of the best pitchers in the AL right now, and all that matters is RIGHT NOW.

people are comparing pitchers like its ultimately Dice-K pitching to Escobar...Dice-K has been a lot better than people make it, he loses games due to lack of run support which can very well happen in game 2 for either pitcher

Don't forget: When he sucks, he gets run support. So, it could happen either way.

I am praying that we don't have another Yankees-Sox series. That is all ESPN ever talks about. When will they realize that there are 28 other teams that are worthy of the same coverage.

If KC is good than yes. They should get some coverage. But Angels, D-Backs, and Indians should get the same coverage as New York and Boston. I don't give a darn whose market is bigger or not.

If I was 18+, I'd be asking that question to myself all day. My dad has family living in Kuwait, lower gas prices (around $10-$12 to fill up a tank), no taxes... easy life, but it's pretty boring once you live here long enough (which isn't that long).

Insan, you're confusing Kuwait with Iraq. Kuwait is probably one of theesafest countries in the world right now, cuz the entire country is protected by the US (Iraqi border, you know..)

And BTW, I'm 1/2 white. I won't tell you the other 1/2, cuz if I do, you might think I'd kill you...

Are you serious Kelsdad? Look at the current lineup's average against Sabathia? Nobody has done anything besides A-Rod and Jeter. Major League teams don't skip their best starting pitcher so that he doesn't have to face a certain team. What a joke.

Personally, I think experience means very little in the playoffs. Bonderman pitched pretty well at home in his first postseason start last year against the Yankees as I recall.

As far as Carmona being either on or off Romiezzo, look at the numbers. The stats don't support that supposition. Out of 32 starts, he gave up more than 3 earned runs just five times. The guy isn't hot and cold. He's been consistent all season. He was second in the AL in ERA.

Anonymous Fanatic = npurinto by the way and to finish that off, Did anybody read Heyman's article the other day on CNN/SI? Debunking the myth about experience and momentum meaning anything come playoff time. Starting pitching for both teams will be critical. As an Indian fan, my major concern is the Yankees ability to work the count. If they can get Sabathia and Carmona out by the sixth, the slight advantage the Indians have will be negated.

"Jeter is still the best shortstop in baseball." Jeter isn't even the best shortstop on the Yankees! I can name four shortstops off the top of my head who I'd rather have than Jeter: Rollins, Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, and you know what? Troy Tulowitski. Similar skill set, better defense by a mile, and he's a ton younger.

Also, experience doesn't matter as much as you might think in the playoffs. Look at how well the Tigers did last year, and how poorly (relatively) the Yankees have done in the past two postseasons. Think of the Angels in 2002, the '03 Marlins, the '05 White Sox, all kinds of teams lately who haven't had a lot of postseason experience and have done fantastically well.
