AGMVC: Best Major League Pitchers (Active)

by user Jgov05

<<Back to the AGMVC

When I discovered the AGMVC it captured my interest. So, I decided to create a category for the best active major-league pitchers (starters only for now; closers will be a separate category). I'll start off and then you can add your own.

The hardest part of this is where to rank the fantastic rookies. I put in Liriano because he has been so great this year. Note that this is the best based on talent in their current state, past performance was only nominally considered.

  1. Johan Santana
  2. Brandon Webb
  3. Roy Halladay
  4. Chris Carpenter
  5. Pedro Martinez
  6. Carlos Zambrano
  7. Roy Oswalt
  8. Jason Schmidt
  9. Curt Schilling
  10. Francisco Liriano

I actually think Glavine deserves to be on the list over Pedro...

Put that then - you're supposed to create your own version of the list and tag it on to the bottom of the article. It's been a while since we've had one of these...

I'm going to make some more AGMVCs. I love this idea.

Is it active pitchers based on career, or based on current abilities?

Since he said "this is the best based on talent in their current state", I only considered this season. That why I've got Lackey, Arroyo, Liriano, etc. so high.

I didn't want it to be based on career because then Maddux, Glavine, Johnson, and Clemens would be the top 4 on everybody's lists. And those clearly aren't the best pitchers today (though Glavine has been good).

I would hardly call Glavine or Schmidt "youngsters".

Jeff Francis was an interesting pick...not a bad pick, but an interesting one.

Well, I'm a Rockies fan so it may be a little "homer love" but he is having a very solid year and I think he's going to be an excellent pitcher for a lot of years to come.

Roy Halladay is by far the best active pitcher. What other pitcher has double the wins vs loses, and he plays for the blue jays who haven't been the greatest team during his tenure.
