The ArmchairGM Voting Committee had a record turnout with 10 voters throwing in their two cents for the top ten second basemen. Chase Utley received a perfect score of 100. The rest of the voting was a lot closer. 18 different player had at least one vote, thanks in part to a very unusual list by BMetts. You can see the results here.
It's time for the AGMVC to vote once again and vote for the top ten third basemen. And while we do that, let's take a look at the top ten third basemen of all time.
1. Mike Schmidt - One day Alex Rodriguez is going to take over this spot, but right now A-Rod is busy climbing up the list of the greatest shortstops of all-time. Right now Schmidt is the obvious choice for the greatest third baseman of all-time. He had a great glove at the hot corner and is the most powerful thirdbaseman in the history of the game.
2. George Brett - Despite all the homers from Mathews and Schmidt, Brett is the only thirdbaseman in the history of the game with 5000 total bases. He made a run at hitting .400 in 1980, but finished just short with a .390 AVG. He is probably the best all-around player on this list.
3. Eddie Mathews - He's the only thirdbaseman besides Schmidt to be a member of the 500 HR club. He broke into the league with a bang and was a fantastic player in his 20's. His play declined a lot when he was in his 30's, but he still managed a great career.
4. Wade Boggs - Not much of a power hitter, but he was always able to make solid compact with the ball and sprayed doubles all over the place. He hit at least .300 in 15 of his 18 years and had an OBP of at least .400 11 times.
5. Brooks Robinson - He had some pretty good years with the bat, but this guy was best known for his amazing glove at third base. He won the Gold Glove 16 times, tied for the most in major league history with pitcher, Jim Kaat
6. Chipper Jones - His .538 SLG is higher than anyone on this list including Schmidt. He doesn't have the range at third that he used to, but right now we're watching one of the best ever third baseman. At only 34 he still has a few years left in him to try to move up on this list.
7. Frank "Home Run" Baker - With the nickname "Home Run" you'd expect him to at least have 100 for his career...but in an era dominated by pitching, he was a legitimate offensive threat. His numbers don't look impressive compared to some of the guys today, but compared to the guys in his time, he was quite a hitter.
8. Ron Santo - Santo was a good hitter with power and has 5 gold gloves in his resume. He doesn't have an impressive career AVG, but he did hit over .300 four times.
9. Darrell Evans - He's one of the more underrated ballplayers in the game's history and he has more homers than any other thirdbaseman besides Schmidt and Matthews.
10. Ken Boyer - He hti for power and had gold glove defense. He didn't do much after he turned 34, but he was a very good player in his prime.
