AFL Playoffs: Conference Championship Games, Sheridan Lines

The AFL Conference Championship games will be played this Saturday.

At 1pm the 9-9 Columbus Destroyers roll into Phillips Arena to take on the 15-2 Georgia Force. Columbus comes in looking to repeat the road feat that the Chicago Rush pulled of last year and win 4 road playoff games. They've dispatched the Tampa Bay Storm and the 15-1 Dallas Desperados, but they're running into a combined scoring machine/defensive powerhouse in the Georgia Force. Will Columbus keep their streak going and what would be the most improbable playoff run in the entire 21 year history of the AFL, or will the Force bring them back to earth? The line is Georgia by 11, but after watching the Columbus playoff games so far, I think it will be much closer than Force Coach Doug Plank will be happy with.

At 4pm, the 13-4 and defending AFL champions Chicago Rush slam into HP Pavilion to face the 14-3 and perennial powerhouse San Jose SaberCats. After rolling to the second biggest AFL playoff beatdown since 2003 Monday (shame on you for watching that lame HR contest) on the LA Avengers, a wounded-QB-led Rush squad gets ready to face a shocked SaberCats defense who got scorched for 67 points and 416 passing yards in their own house versus the Colorado Crush on Saturday. The only reason the SaberCats are still playing is that Mark Grieb and the 'Cats offense scored on all 11 offensive possession. The key to this game is the status of Rush QB Matt D'Orazio's back. He played capably Monday, but after a plane flight and a strange hotel bed, what shape will he be in? If he plays like he did Monday, then the 3 point line favouring San Jose is reasonable. If D'Orazio can't go or isn't effective, watch multiple AFL playoff records fall as San Jose will run Chicago all the way back to the Windy City.

I like Doug Kay, the Destroyers' coach. He coached down in in Raleigh 5 years ago and, as with all AFL games, the players and coaches hang out on the field after the game. Coach Kay was always polite and took his time giving good answers. It's neat to get to talk to the about the game and what's next, etc. Matt Nagy has taken a team (The Force) to the Arena Bowl (two years ago) so it's not like the whole team is brand new to the playoffs. They've also got an above-average secondary, so the key for the Destroyers will be getting into Griesen's face with the pass rush.
