AFC Preview

Patriots- It’s amazing that Brady put up the numbers he did in the past with the kind of receivers he had. Now that he finally has some big targets he is ready for a monster season. The only question make is the age of the line backing crew, but Thomas should provide some relief there.

Jets- Pennington’s reemergence was welcomed by Jets fans this past season. Washington and Jones should provide a deadly combo. They have a good chance of returning to the playoffs, and possibly go deeper than last year.

Dolphins- If only they could play the Patriots every game, because they seem to always beat them. Besides being spoiling some teams’ playoff hopes, the Dolphins won’t do much.

Bills- Losing Fletcher will hurt. Losman can hopefully continue to develop. Lee Evans is going to have to deal with double coverage, because the Bills can’t do much else.

Chargers- Last year they were clearly the most complete team. They even outplayed the Patriots in the playoffs. They gave the Brady too many chances to score by making critical mistakes that eventually cost them the game. Set for a deep playoff run and set there eyes on the Super Bowl.

Broncos- Cutler got some important playing time last year. One mistake cost them their spot in the playoffs, and the Broncos don’t plan on missing the playoffs for the second straight year.

Chiefs- They just can’t seem to catch a break against the Colts. A better defense would get them in the playoffs, but without it they are just one of the good teams not to make the playoffs.

Raiders- Culpepper is just going to slow down Russell’s development. The Raiders should accept they are not going to contend this year and get Russell some time so next year is possible. The defense should keep them close in games, but the offense will find a way to mess it up.

Ravens- They still have a stifling defense coupled with Jamal Lewis’s improvement. McNair will dictate how far they go in the playoffs. If he can avoid making big mistakes, this team could go deep.

Steelers- Last year was not the real Steelers. Some unfortunate injuries cost them in the early going. Look for Big Ben to revitalize this team. Ward is still a top receiver and a great blocker.

Bengals- The AFC is just too good for the Bengals to make the playoffs. The Palmer-Johnson-Johnson trio should make things interesting though.

Browns-This team needs to be able to keep Edwards and Winslow healthy to even be considered a threat to any team. Plus, they just need to flat out perform better.

Colts- The Colts were not the best team last year. They just played their best when it mattered. They still have a shaky defense, probably even shakier after some players left for Free Agency. Vinatieri will win them a game or two during the season.

Jaguars- This team is a good quarterback away from serious contention. Garrard and Leftwich just don’t cut it. Besides that this team is pretty strong.

Titans- Young has taken charge of this team. The overachieved last year, but they still are not a bad team. Some key losses due to free agency hinders their chances.

Texans- Schaub is good, but he’s inexperienced and he needs some help from his offensive line to be able to throw the ball. He doesn’t have any big targets to look for either. They will continue to be cellar dwellers at least this year.

Playoff Matchups: Wild Card Round: Patriots (bye) Chargers (bye) Broncos beat the Ravens Colts escape the Steelers

Divisional Round: Patriots beat the Broncos Chargers beat the Colts

Conference Championship: Patriots beat the Chargers

There is a shocker, the same author that has the Redskins making the playoffs, and the Rams making the Super Bowl, has his beloved Pats in the Super Bowl as well. At least he does not mock the rest of the AFC as he did with his predictions of the NFC.

You went from Ballsy to Obvious. I guess you're way more familiar to the AFC rather than the NFC. These predictions aren't too great either, you went too obvious on us. Where's your sleeper?

Look at the Author's name!  :) It is obvious this one has a bias - noth only for his team, but for his team's conference as well.

For real, it's like me trying to figure out the NL. I'm not very good at it (I picked the Astros to represent the NL in the world series for goodness sakes), but at least I make an effort to clarify my predictions in detail.

First problem...patriots have to go through Denver

Belichick is 2-5 versus the Shanahan's broncos...

I don't care if its in new england...that's a really tough game and the pats would basically rather play any other team...

Plus the Broncos have the best CB tandem in the league, if anyone can stop the Pats, its the Broncos.

the sick part is...they could have had darrent williams too...wow (RIP)

Not sure why, but the Broncos really do own the pats...and any real pats fan will tell you that...keeping the broncos out of the playoffs is a pats fan's dream...

I dunno, but Shanahan seems to own belichick...but the 'chick also owns first and seocnd year QBs...(there's a stat out there about it)...dunno where, but its ridiculous

The Broncos do own the Pats, the only time they've won since I can remember was on Monday night 2 or 3 years, the intentional safety game, so they really shouldn't have won that game anyways. And Jamal Lewis isn't on the Ravens anymore. Cleveland Browns.

The Texans have no big targets to throw to? Andre Johnson led the league in receptions last season with 103. In Buffalo, Evans was double teamed a lot last season, and still caught 82 balls for 1292 yards. Finally as Meg said, Lewis is in Cleveland now. The Ravens picked up Willis McGahee from Buffalo in a trade, which is why the Bills selected Cal RB Marshawn Lynch with the 12th overall pick.

i meant McGahee. And what was Johnson's career high before last year? It was 79. So you consider him amazing after one year. Maybe its just me though, that base on career totals. The Broncos may have the best wide reciever tandem, but you can't tell me they are going to stop Moss, Stallworth, Caldwell, and Watson. Especially when the Pats go with 5 wide recievers. You can't say they couldn't throw to anyone of those five starters. Maybe, its just me, but I have heard basically everyone picking the Pats, but you are right I am absolutely the most biassed person.

So Johnson's high before that was 79. If I recall that still would put him in front of any receiver in New England since at least 2003. The highest total a Pats receiver would be Deion Branch's 78 catch, 998 yard season in 05. If you want to talk career numbers, we can do that:

Andre Johnson: 61 games, 311 receptions, 3953 yards Donte' Stallworth: 68 games, 233 receptions, 3516 yards Reche Caldwell: 63 games, 137 receptions, 1710 yards and since you threw him in too...

Benjamin Watson: 23 games, 80 catches, 1100 yards

I am not going to say Moss is not a gamebreaking player, however the other names you mentioned, their stats don't match up with Johnson. Maybe that's just me though, basing it on the career numbers that say Caldwell caught just 77 passes in his NFL career before last season.

And like I said Brady has never had a good reciever besides Branch, and even he wasn't that good. Besides Caldwell is the 3rd reciever at best. So why don't you compare both number #1 recievers. Then the #2 to the Texans #2. Not the #3 to the #1. But thats not logical at all.

Show me where in your commentary you said that Brady never had a good receiver other than Branch? Seeing that this was the extent of your coverage:

"Patriots- It’s amazing that Brady put up the numbers he did in the past with the kind of receivers he had. Now that he finally has some big targets he is ready for a monster season. The only question make is the age of the line backing crew, but Thomas should provide some relief there."

Now, I see no mention of Branch anywhere there. Number one to number one...Caldwell, statistically was the #1 of the Patriots last season. Johnson was statistically the #1 WR for the Texans. Therefore, it was not like I was blowing numbers out of proportion. Stallworth caught all of 38 balls for PHI last year. Is he the #1? Moss's last three seasons, dating back to his final year in Minnesota, yielded 49,60, and 42 catches. None of those match up to Johnson's output either.

silencer, that is exactly why I said he had no targets, because Caldwell is not nearly as good as Johnson. You can't tell me Brady does not finally have recievers.

I never said Brady did not have receivers...however, you can't discount the fact that he had Branch previously, and that the other WRs he had were not serviceable. Buffalo has Lee Evans. That's it. It didn't stop him from gaining nearly 1300 yards and leading the league in deep/bomb yards and TDs. The statement was made to compare the Pats #1 with Andre Johnson since I threw his stats out, which I did. The defense of saying, well now he has receivers has nothing to do with past performances.

The two best teams in the NFL are the Chargers and the Patriots. The Patriots beat them when they played terrible, so you would think when they are better they would win.
