A.J. Over Liriano?

11
Vote

by user AWeiner18

Do you people honestly think A.J. Pierzynski, a 29-year-old catcher who is putting up solid but not spectacular numbers, deserves to go to the All-Star game instead of rookie Francisco Liriano?

I think Liriano should be placed over A.J. First, Liriano has amazing statistics (9-1, 1.99 era, .207 vs. left handed hitters, .202 vs. right handed hitters). This proves how unstopable he has been this season. What makes his case stronger is he is a rookie with really only one season under his belt. Second, there was a comment that there is too many pitchers already. True, but there was enough pitchers in Milwaukee and since the teams used all of them up, the game was declared a tie. You can never have too many pitchers, especially when you have a guy like Mark Redman on your staff. Now A.J does present a strong case because 1. he is a catcher and 2. his stats are decent. But A.J. has been in the league for a long time. The more deserving player is Franscisco because of how much he has accomplished with no experience.

Probably not, but A.J. plays in Chicago and is more of a name.

Do you honestly think a rookie deserves to go to the All-Star game over the AL's best hitter and a solid MLB player and rising star for the last three years? Not that Hafner even deserved to be reduced to the Final Vote. He should be starting or at least a regular reserve with his numbers.

Yes I am a cpcp. You just said it in the sentence. HE IS A ROOKIE. A.J. is not the best hitter in the American league, Joe Mauer is. You are right about Hafner, but who would you kick out? I would kick out Gary Matthews.

On another note, one sentence "articles" with no backing and just a random thought aren't really encouranged.

If I knew anything about wiki writing I would attempt to create a discussion forum section. We need a place to create article-like things that generate discussion

It's not a terrible thing, these one sentence articles. I mean, this is a point worth discussing, but how much does the original author need to actually say? If the community thinks it's worthwhile to discuss, they'll vote for it. If not, they'll not.

I'm guessing, or at least my issue is, I put work into some articles and they count just as much as ones that are like this. The reason it gets votes is because its controversial...people want to discuss this, but why should the author get credit for bring the discussion up. I was thinking abotu writing about this, but I probably would have written an actual opinion or just a news snipit and went to town on discussion...

"how much does the original author need to actually say?" The author needs to say why "we people" are wrong for what "we" did. Why does the author think he/she is right and the rest of the world is wrong? What makes Liriano the better choice in the eyes of the author? What is the author's motivation for making the post? A discussion should involve discussion. Not just random statments of "I'm right, you're wrong"

Yes, it would be great to see the author back up his opinion with some numbers and some facts.

And look at his numbers. It is extremely hard for a rookie to put up those numbers. Even though I am a Tigers fan, I would still vote for Fransisco because he is dominating everyone.

This is the kind of stuff you should put in your actual post. By the way, I hope you don't take this as a personal attack. I'm trying to give constructive criticism.

I'd argue that both Final Vote winners didn't deserve it over their contenders. Nomar over Capuano? Thankfully, Cappy still might get in because of Pedro's absence.

I think Nomar's number are just as deserving, if not more so, of an All-Star appearance than Capuano's. But I wanted one of the pitchers to get on. The NL has enough bats, but their pitching is very weak. They needed another good arm, not another guy to come in for a pinch-hitting appearance.

There are MORE THAN ENOUGH pitchers on the AL's roster already. I'm fine with this choice. Although, I would rather see Pronk than A.J.

I couldn't believe it, either. The guy who has arguably been the best starting pitcher in the American League not being at the All-Star game is a travesty. The players screwed him with their ignorance, the coach screwed him with his arrogane, and the fans screwed him with their ignorance.

I don't see how you can blame Ozzie and his arrogance for not picking Liriano. It's not his fault he HAD to pick Mark Redman.

No, but it is his fault he CHOSE to pick Buehrle. There are about four pitchers that were more deserving than Buehrle. That's where his arrogance comes in. Oh, it also comes in when he said that if someone got injured, no matter what position it was, he'd put Joe Crede on the team.

Well what did you call it when Joe Torre took 11 of his guys? THe reason he took Buehrle over Schilling is cuz Schilling won't be available to pitch in the game since he's starting Sunday against the White Sox, Buehrle is available. He's said a million times he picked guys he can use to win the game. Also what you don't hear about is the fact that Guillen called Terry Francona and asked him about Schilling, and was informed by Francona that he doesn't want Schilling throwing in that game on 1 day rest. Also how is supporting your players arrogance? They won a World Series for him last year. I would hope my coach showed me the same support.

Also Joe Crede is hitting .301 with 16HR and 57RBI along with Gold Glove defense. Troy Glaus is batting .240. Who should be on that team?

I think Nomar absolutely deserved it; he has the best average in the league! Give me a break! I was somewhat indifferent about the AL voting this year because I didn't have any strong positive feelings for any of these players, but I voted for Liriano, if only because I dislike A.J. - if I can't decide between two players based on stats, I'll likely go with personal feelings as the determining factor. That being said, age had nothing whatsoever to do with my vote; I am never more or less likely to vote for someone based on age.I think the whole "he's a rookie, he deserves it more" argument is ridiculous.

I wonder if they'll use Nomar at a position other than first since they'd probably want Pujols and Howard in as much as possible, especially if they're down by 5 runs after the first inning like the trend has been recently.

I am a cpcp. Thank you for giving me advice. As you can tell, I am new to this. Next time I will prove my post with stats. Now this is why I think Liriano should be placed over A.J. I also agree with you on that one. Many question marks. Do you guys think Mark Redman should represent Kansas City? Why not Jimmy Gobble, a reliable reliever for the Royals? Look at his stats: 3.66 ERA, 3-1 in 53.2 innings pitched.

A.J. wasn't even the best CATCHER in the Final Vote. That honor belongs to Ramon Hernandez. For those that missed it the first time, I actually wrote an article about this, just search for "Choosing the Final 2006 All-Star: American League" or go to my User page and it will be there.

right on the money. Hernandez perhaps isn't as good defensively, but otherwise he's better.
