A-Rod vs. Wright

by user Calamity Francis

On a long drive home from JFK Airport to Summit, NJ, I was listening to a discussion on WFAN Radio about who fans would rather have as a starting 3rd basemen on their team....David Wright or Alex Rodriguez.

While there is no doubt that A-Rod has much more natural ability (and more MVP's), Wright is much younger (8 years) makes about 24.5 million dollars less a year, is just entering his prime and has shown early on he has a flair for delivering in clutch situations.

I personally feel that over the course of both of their careers, there's no doubt A-Rod is the right choice. If you were to choose who to have over the next 3 or 4 years, it's still A-Rod. However, looking over a 5-10 year horizon, Wright becomes the better choice due to his age.

So, Armchair GM users, I ask you this: If you were starting a team today who would you rather have on your team?

ARod. Of course, I'd have him at SS. The real question is Jeter (who should be a 3B) versus Wright.

At this moment, it's Wright. With the amount of talent and potential he has you're not going to see a huge difference in numbers. Even this year, Wright's 15 homers matches A-Rod, and Wright trumps A-Rod in BA, OBP, Slugging percentage, and then obviously OPS. All that for 24 million less. If you're talking about starting a team with them both as rookies, it's tough to project how Wright will be in 9 years.

I gotta gree with corey, its impossible to compare. If you gave me wrights numbers for the next 9 years, then i'll tell you. I am biased against wright but...If he's this good in NY with all the "Pressure" then he's my pick baring some sort of injury. Plus, this guy is less luckily to be on roids. However, Arod is the model of consistancy. You know what, I go w/ arod, the guy plays multiple positions well, gives you 40+ HRs and a .300 AVG every year. Plus He could hit 600 easily...maybe 700...for his career. Lemme see wright in a few years and i'll give you a for certain...

If age and $$$ are both taken into the equation, I'll take Wright. He's only getting better and he's a much better bargain. But if money were no object and we're talking about who the better player is right now, it's Rodriguez.

I am with Sammich on this one. If I am starting a team and I can get that talent for that money, I go Wright and look to spend my money elsewhere.

Gotta go with Wright at the moment. The better way to compare this is to look at them after 2 years in the league. If that were the case, I would go A-Rod. His numbers were sick when he was a youngster with Seattle. But based on current age, current salary, and current ability to not have everyone in the free world hate you, I'm going with Wright.

That's probably another thing to take into consideration. He doesn't deserve 98.5% of the hatred directed towards him, but that doesn't change the fact that people do hate him. I'd rather have a likeable star on my team

I think this is something that I migth take a lot of heat for but...
David Wright plays in the NL East, the toughest team there is arguably the phillies or Braves and neither has the pitching staff that looks dominant. Much like the Mets being considered the best team in baseball, they don't play anyone all that good. Rodrigues has to play the sox 18 times a year and look at the jays, there's another tough 18...The money thing I get now, but lets see wrights contract at ARod's age and we can decide. Anyone know how much arod made at wright's age?

Come on, it's not like the AL east has such powerhouse pitchers. Halladay and Schilling, maybe Beckett. Maybe you can talk about Kazmir, but I wouldn't put him at that level yet.

Give me Wright. He is younger, although less powerful than AROD. Wright is the type of player you build a championship around.

Wright is also more marketable then Arod. Arod is arguably one of the best offensive talents baseball has ever seen, yet Yankees fans still berrage him with constant boos. On the other hand, go to Shea stadium and you will see a wave of David Wright jerseys and chants of MVP. Wright has the marketability of Jeter with better offensive numbers. If he proves to be clutch in the big game, he will be close to the perfect player from an organizational perspective.

You put Wright on the Yankees and he makes a bad error in the postseason or doesn't get a clutch hit and he gets booed just as hard as A-Rod. You can't compare how Yanks fans feel about A-Rod to how Mets fans see Wright, it's apples and oranges. Jeter is beloved for what he's done in the biggest spots, that's what makes him marketable to Yanks fans. Wright would never get the kind of respect from Yanks fans that Jeter does simply because Wright has so far never proved himself in the big spots. If he did, they'd love him... if he didn't he'd be booed.

A-Rod is a better hitter and a much better fielder. There's no part of Wright's game that any reasonable person would take over A-Rod. I'm not a big A-Rod fan, but he has proven himself longer, and facing much harder competition. Wright is not in his leauge yet.

A-Rod has not been a very good fielder since he made the shift to third base.
