A-Rod eyes the North Side; Cubs fans despondant

14

by Brittschramm

From the WTF department, the New York Magazine reported that famed agent Scott Boras was in early talks with the Chicago Cubs concerning the acquisition of A-Rod to be not only their highest profile player but to also be part owner.  Of course, as soon as the news was "leaked", Boras already began his spin doctoring of the incident and denied that he was working that angle.

But, c'mon, he's friggin' Scott Boras, the guy who got the Rangers to sign A-Rod to an assload of money from Seattle.  Then, he got the Yanks to help pick up the tab when the Rangers got over their collective heads.  He has the ability to get people to buy his crap and sign his players.  At this point, anything concerning this deal is possible.

Of course, no one in their right mind asked the fans, which is a smart move.  I mean, how can you put an entire fanbase on suicide watch?

A-Rod wants to play for the Cubs and own them, Mark Cuban wants to buy them. Haven't I suffered enough as a Cub fan?

if you're a cubs fan you should love the idea of Cuban as an owner, look at what he did for the mavericks franchise that was irrelevant before he took over. He did that with a cap... imagine what he could do in MLB.

Then you are NOT a true die hard bleed Cubbie blue Cub fan!!!! If Cuban became the owner, it would mark the end of the Trib era - one of the worst in all of baseball - one of the reasons the Cubs have been the laughing stock of the MLB for years...

Cuban has the know-how to create a winning team; the money helps too but that's besides the point... Cuban wouldn't be affraid to after that big named free agent (unlike the Trib that needs their arms twisted)... Cuban also wouldn't affraid to make the bold moves needed to make a winner... the Trib was only in it for the bottom line profit of the Cubs name - they didn't and still don't care about them (the Cubs)...

Romo - you can say that you're a Cub fan all you want - I will never believe you... if you don't want Cuban as an owner - then you don't want a winning team...

I'm glad the Tribune is gone. But Cuban will not buy this team a World Series Ring

As a Mavericks fan: yes, Cuban's antics can be annoying, but there is no doubting the product he puts on the court. I hope he doesn't get the Cubs--then maybe he'll buy the Rangers from Hicks, a truly useless owner.

I agree, Cuban's anticts can be annoying... but you can't deny what Cuban has done for the team and I don't see any Mavs fans complaining... also to some extent, Stienbrenner can be annoying but again, I don't see Yank fans complaining... back in the 80's & 90's Marg Schott (Owner of the Reds) was crazy - she went off the deep end many times with her antics - but look at what she did for the team - she was not affraid to spend the money needed to make the team a contender and I didn't and still don't hear any Reds fans complaining... Cuban with the Cubs will be the same way - antics off the charts but he'll make sure that the Cubs will always be a contender instead of a laughing stock...

The Cubs won't sign Rodriguez. First, it is against MLB rules to tender a contract that offers partial ownership of a franchise to a current player. Second, where the hell would they put him? Ramirez is a great hot corner man, who is defensively superior to Gay Rod (only 10 errors this year) and has 25 homers and 100 RBI despite missing 30 games. I like Theriot at SS...he's gritty, has wheels, and plays hard every inning.

I agree, I like Theriot at SS too, but I think AROD is a little bit better statistically, don't you think Silencer. ;) I don't want him on the Cubs, and I don't want him on the Red Sox. In fact, if the Yankees don't re-sign AROD, I will definitely be very surprised.

Where would you ut A-Rod? Easy - at his NATURAL position - SS... move Theriot to 2B... as for DeRosa, while he migh be ok, I'd rather see an infield of Ramirez, A-Rod, Theriot, Lee than an infield of Ramirez, Theriot, DeRosa, Lee... if that means trade away DeRosa or move him to a platoon 2B/RF - then fine - so be it...

Why would I shift around the infield to accommodate a guy who tanks in the postseason on a regular basis? DeRosa has driven in 72 runs, has a .295 average and a .375 OBP, usually hitting either in the 2 or 6 hole. He is a leader who gives it 100 percent. The Cubs infield is extremely solid defensively.

I'm no A-Rod fan, but you can't seriously compare DeRosa and his 72 RBI with A-Rod. Chicago, get ready for A-Rod--I've been calling this pairing since the day Pinella arrived.

Mark my words, Alex Rodriguez will not be in a Cubs uniform. He does not fit the mold of the ball club. This team scraps, battles, plays sound defense, and has chemistry.

On top of that, a) Rodriguez has no idea of what is going on, b) Boras told the AP he had no discussions with anyone and c) it could be considered tampering to talk to a guy currently under contract.

Finally, and once again I will put this in: A player can neither have part ownership of a team nor negotiate for future ownership.

I would guess Boras was just out there negotiating for full ownership of the cubs... A-rod between his contract and endorsements and investments should have enough to buy it outright. I don't know whether you can own and play for the same team though. If he was negotiating a contract and baseball is anything like every other sport that would be tampering, cause a-rod is still under contract until he opts out this summer so someone might be in a bit of trouble.

Isn't negotiating with another team while under contract with the NY Yankees "tampering"? And exactly how are A-Hole's teammates supposed to feel heading into the friggin' playoffs knowing that "one of their own" has his agent out there grubbing for more $? Care to comment Kelsdad?

This isn't the NFL...

As for Tampering, I think, technically speaking, A-Rod isn't really involved. I think Boras and/or the cubs have been in contact, but this is just a case of someone blowing it out of proportion.

You have a point, but it would take a more professional look at MLB rules to know...

I dunno JuT. It reeks something fierce that an agent would wine (whine) & dine with another team during the season on behalf of his client while under contract elsewhere. Anybody here have an above average understanding of baseball's CBA?

This is Scott Boras...

I agree, it doesn't make sense...

I wouldn't be surprised if Boras was simply "making a visit" to the cubs to discuss current clients and A-Rod popped up in conversation (if you catch my drift)...

It is what it is...

scott boras will structure a deal with the tribune to make a-rod a part owner. he will play at a salary of $1.00 and reap a lifelong owenership in the profitable Cubs organization. It will happen.
