Ladies and Gentleman, please welcome the newest member of the 500 Homerun Club- Alex Rodriguez.
Before you close this article and dismiss me as a misinformed attention-seeker, hear me out.
Last night A-Rod hit the 499th Home Run of his major league career. The reason why it was his 499th is because he only hit 498 home runs in the games he played prior to last night's Yankees - Royals tilt. But it is possible- however unlikely- that this will not remain true forever.
You see, Major League Baseball made a rule-change prior to this season, dictating that games postponed due to rain beyond the 5th inning are to be CONTINUED at a later date (provided they meet the criteria, for example that the home team not be leading after a full inning of play, etc). The Yankees, on June 28th, played a game (or most of a game) against the Baltimore Orioles, in which they came back in the top of the 8th inning to take a 2 run lead. The game has been frozen, with Derek Jeter on 1st base and 2 men out in the top of the 8th, and the Yankees leading the Orioles 8-6.
On Friday night, this game will be continued, and Alex Rodriguez will have at least one more at-bat. Interestingly, since this game occured on 6/28/07, if A-Rod drills an "A-bomb" at Camden Yards during the continuation on Friday night, the Home Run he hit last night off Gil Meche will have been the 500th of his career, being that he will have hit 499 home runs in games prior to the home run he hit last night.
Of course, should that happen, the fan who catches the ball will protest, arguing that what matters is the natural order of events, not what statistics dictate, but I feel that, should something like this occur, it would be a shame for nobody to have congratulated A-Rod on his 500th career homer last night.
So, at the risk of sounding like a complete fool, let me- conditionally- congratulate A-Rod on having reached this historic milestone.
