A-Rod Caught in a Borass?

23
Vote

by Tyduffy

A-Rod and Scott Boras earned the ire of the sporting world, as they announced during the World Series that he would become a free agent.

Buster Olney, citing anonymous sources, reported that the Yankees were over $100 million short of even talking to A-Rod.

The Yankees offered the slugger a 5 year $150 million extension, which when added to the last three years of the contract, would have totaled 8 years and $231 million.

According to Olney, A-Rod wanted a $350 million offer just to come to sit down at the bargaining table.

As far as the Yankees are concerned, his career in pinstripes has ended. They have, thus far, maintained their refusal to negotiate with Rodriguez post-opting out of his contract.

This leads to two possible conclusions. Boras already knows that he has a massive deal in place with at least one club. Or, he is bluffing like crazy in the hope that he can tempt a Tom Hicks-like figure to bite.

There has been speculation about many clubs, though with nearly all of them there is as much of a reason not to sign Rodriguez as there is to sign him.

The Angels have welcomed over 3 million in attendance the past three seasons. He would give them much needed star power and cache in LA. They could also dearly use another power bat in the lineup to pair with Vlad. A-Rod mysteriously praised Mike Scioscia when the Yankees played the Angels earlier in the season. However, does Arte Moreno really want to invest that kind of money and cause the division in the lockeroom of having someone making twice as much as their current hall of fame players.

The Giants have also been mentioned. They need a bat to replace Barry Bonds' swollen presence in the lineup. They need a star player to fill the seats. The numbers are not so bad, given that Bonds is coming off the books. However, they also look to have gotten seriously burned by Scott Boras on the Barry Zito deal. It would be unclear, after the Bonds fiasco, whether they really want to deal with A-Rod's shenanigans.

A-Rod would also be a great fit on the field with the Dodgers. They need a power bat like his in the lineup. There is also the added incentive of manager Joe Torre and bench coach Don Mattingly. He would once again give them a star in a star city. But, does McCourt want to invest that much cash?

The Cubs have been cited as a possibility. He would be loved in Chicago. Rodriguez also has a great relationship with Cubs' manager Lou Piniella. However, the unstable ownership situation strongly suggests that the Cubs will not be making a $350 million investment.

Then, there is perhaps the most outrageous with the Marlins. Despite two World Series victories since their inception, the Marlins haven't been able to develop a fan base. A-Rod is a local boy from Miami, and his presence might arouse interest in the club and keep it in South Florida. However, he would make nearly as much, if not more, than the entire rest of the team in Florida. Why would it make sense to be so frugal and then so profligate?

All of these teams have as much of a reason not to sign A-Rod as they do to sign him. There isn't exactly an obvious candidate that would have agreed to an outrageous contract. Could Boras be bluffing? If he is, where does A-Rod end up?

Two answers, the Tigers or the Red Sox.

The Tigers have been a go to team for Boras in a time of need. They offered Pudge a 4 year $40 million deal when no other teams would give him a multi-year deal. They signed a 5 year $75 million deal with Magglio when his next best offer was 2 years $16 million. They also negotiated a contract. They also have prominent Boras client Gary Sheffield.

They could certainly work him into the lineup. Newly acquired Edgar Renteria will certainly be the shortstop, meaning defensively declining Carlos Guillen would probably be the third baseman. However, Guillen could easily replace Sean Casey at 1st who, though a nice veteran guy to have a round, is a sinkhole in the lineup, leaving the hole for A-Rod at third base.

Though Detroit is not exactly a desirable destination, he would be on a team that should be set to compete for the playoffs over the next five years with all of their young pitching.  He would also get a much more favorable media market and an adoring fan base.

The question would be whether or not the Tigers could come up with the money to make the deal happen, which would basically be up to how much Illitch is willing to spend. However, they have finally seen the benefits of having stars on the team and a winning club, in terms of attendance and merchandise. Adding a megastar like A-Rod would only help that. It could make sense.

The Red Sox should also be considered a possibility.

They have the Boras pedigree. They made two big deals last summer for Boras' clients J.D. Drew and Daisuke Matsuzaka. They also have successfully negotiated with Jason Varitek and Craig Hansen.

They have a gaping hole at third base, and will be clearing a significant amount from the payroll when Ramirez' contract ends after 2008.

And, besides the Yankees, they are the most well off club financially and have the money to get the deal finished.

A-Rod is not very well liked in Boston, but would he really engender that much hatred if he switched sides?  Would the Red Sox fans really be that irate after he started putting up crazy numbers? Would Theo be crazy enough to do it?

Excellent article that brought up a lot very good points. Looked up to see how much Vladimir and Garret Anderson made together in 2007 and it was $25 million so A-Rod would make $5 million more than they made together. One thing for sure is that the Angels need more offense and A-Rod would take the pressure off of Guerrero but wonder what cost it would be in the clubhouse to have a player making that much more money than the others. A-Rod would make more than the whole Rays team made last season when the payroll was $24 million.

WOW! 25 million dollars combined. This just goes to show how crazy A-Rod is by rejecting such a contract with the Yankees. If he DOES sign with LA, it will be a lot of money, and I mean A LOT of money.

I hope to God that A-Rod does NOT go to Boston. JD Drew is one thing, Dice K is another thing... but A-Rod? Even though he CAN produce, he's only one player. You could easily get 2-3 players with the amount of money that A-Rod is probably going to get each year.

A couple things that you did not know for some reason, that are public knowledge.Casey is already gone in Detroit, they told him at the end of the season, Guillen is at 1st base now, this would mean Inge would have to go.

Wonder how Vlad would feel if A-Rod is making double what Vlad made in 2007 ($14.5 million)?

We have a gaping hole at third base?

A-Rod might be the best hitter in baseball, but he isn't worth the money he's asking for. The Red Sox can keep Lowell for half the price of A-Rod (or lower). A-Rod is obviously better than Lowell, but is he twice as good? Furthermore, the Sox can get a good starting pitcher, or a couple of bullpen guys with the money left over.

Thank you, Rawbeezeitz. That's exactly my point. I don't care if AROD is the best player in baseball right now. He is still 1 of 9 guys in a baseball lineup. I would much rather prefer 3 guys for 8 million each than AROD for 25 million dollars. Same amount of money spent, but around twice as much danger in the lineup with 3 more decent guys in the lineup. OR, like you said, pick up another starting pitcher, or a couple of relievers instead of someone in the batting order.

Mike Lowell may not be better offensively than A-Rod, but he is a decent hitter, one of the best defensive third basemen in the game today, and actually does well in the playoffs.

Are you THAT sure he's going to Philly? Wouldn't they need to work on their pitching more than paying 30 million dollars/year to one guy that has offensive talent, when the Phillies know that they have one of the best offenses in MLB right now with JROLL, Chase, Howard, etc.

I think redsox should get him and not a-rod, like their is not point wasting alot money for one player. Lowell is more than enough to help redsox as a 3rd basemen, and like romi said Boston should waste their money on other baseball players rather than one player.

They are going to get pitching through trades. Getting Mike Lowell to replace our platoon of Abraham Nunez and Wes Helms is a huge deal, especially considering the free agent market is a desert.

Thanks Salmanpour. I think you meant SHOULDN'T, not should. :P I get the picture though. This is exactly what the Yankees think, BTW. They figure that since A-Rod HAS done good, the Yanks might as well just sign him. So, they did. What they didn't realize is that they waste 25 million dollars/year for every year he plays. Like I said, you could easily get 3 decent players for the Yankees. But NO... the Yankees wanted the "best player in baseball".

I agree, Brendan. Mike Lowell would do a lot of good in a Phillies uniform, offensively and defensively, but let's think for a second here? What is the one thing that the Phillies want to accomplish this offseason? Get better hitters? NO!!! Getting good pitching. That's what killed them last year. They are a really good offensive team already. Why would you sign someone 30+ years of age when you could easily get a couple of good pitchers instead (what you want).

First of all - great article. Well done.

A-Hole is already the highest paid player. Based on what stats does A-Hole and Super A$$hole Boras believe that a richer contract is warranted?

Yes - the stats last season were very good but not record breaking great.

Any team signing this twerp for more dough than what that idiot Hicks granted should be contracted out of MLB.

Fack the owners when this CBA expires and they bitch about being broke and cry for a salary cap. If any situation called for restraint and fiscal responsibility it is the free agency negotiations with A-Hole.

What a farce.

Great article. Being a Red Sox fan, I keep going back and forth on them getting A-Rod. Playing at Fenway 81 games a year, A-Rod would hit 70 homeruns a year. He is tailor made for that park. My concern is that he has a tendency to bring down the clubhouse. After a lot of years of hearing that when you play in Boston, there are 25 guys and 25 cabs. Those days are finally over. Boston epitomizes what a team is. I would hate for anyone to change that.

In the playoffs we saw Ellsbury, Pedroia, Matzusaka, Kielty, Lugo and JD Drew all step up in the clutch whenever the Sox got hot, I think if A-Rod is at the plate in the midst of a Sox rally he will come thru but he is DEFINITELY gonna have to consider a paycut, the Sox wont pay 350 mill, well i hope not

I, personally, would not pay A-Rod less than 15 million dollars/year. There ARE players on the free agent list other than him, you know.

1. Anonymous fanatic - I did not know that the Tigers had told Casey unofficially that he wouldn't be back next season. I moved away from Detroit a few months ago. I was too busy paying attention to teams that were relevant.

2. I don't want to see Lowell go either. I think he is a great guy. But you can never have two many guys who can hit 50 HR and put up a +1.000 OPS.

3. I don't think the Sox would go for a 10 year $350 million deal. But, I think if it becomes clear that Boras didn't have a team lined up and the bidding drops down to say 8 years $250 million. They would have to consider it.

Tigers are not going to spend $350M on one player. Team doesn't have that kind of cash, and the fan base is not that strong here, in spite of recent winning season. You didn't mention one technical possiblity, the Mets, as they can afford him. Although I seriously doubt they will try to get him.

I think A-rod should stop being so greedy and be happy with what he's getting, like 30 mil thats more than enough to make any baseball player get on his cleats and sweat his butt off for the team. Thats the problems now a day with baseball players they are just in it for the money not for the fun of the game.

Exactly. He's just asking for more and more, and all of these teams want him. All he's going to do is smile as several battle back and forth in order to try and get A-Rod. He may not be loved by Cynthia, but he is loved by several baseball teams when he's a free agent, and in his mind, that's the only thing that counts.

Would like to know how much of a cut Boras will get if he gets A-Rod signed for $30 million...he already has to be rich from the $14 million J.D. Drew got from Red Sox in 2007...if he gets 10 percent that is over a million just from Drew. He doesn't have to worry about being homeless anytime soon.
