Hello everyone and welcome to the historic evolution of everyone's favorite game...Madden. For some, an obsession. Lightweights. For most, its a religion! In one case, I heard of a guy who had a full grown beard before he even turned the system off! Since today is Madden holiday, I decided to research the Madden game an even ten years, from 1998-2007. Be careful, fella's, the early versions may make your eyes hurt!

1998

Wowsers! Notice the random red dots around the spiraling football. Players are pretty much indistinguishable, so there is no need to worry about who you are playing as.

1999

Crikey! Defenders look like big ol' bubbas, so watch out! Players are somewhat distinguishable, but look more like blobs than anything. The field looks like someone took a green crayola crayon and drew it, but it is certainly a monumental improvement over the previous year. I see some promise.

2000

WATCH OUT!!!! Madden 2000 decided it would give players the ability to fly. Yes, even Tony Siragusa could fly over the competition. Don't believe me? Google it! By now, we can tell who is who, despite the excessive bulk of most players. Uniforms are not quite clean yet, as excessive movement may cause a little blur to the side of the player.

2001

Hmm, I like it! Graphics were vastly improved, thus gameplay was more fun. The field still hasn't changed much, but that's okay. We are introduced into better views of the sky, and yes, refs are still fun to run through!

2002

Ooph. What is this? Have the graphics regressed in the course of a year? Maybe this is just a bad angle, but players are considerably blocky! The field has been given a new, thread-like pattern. The color is pretty much the same throughout any weather condition. A user will begin to wonder..."Is this as good as it gets??"

2003

Oh, okay. Graphics are brighter, players are faster, and WR's jump higher. The uniforms are still a bit choppy, but by far the best game yet. The pants seem well-defined. The soundtrack to this game could raise even a dead person's pulse.

2004

WHOO! Graphics are improved in most areas, as the speedy Mike Vick is the cover boy for this version. The names beneath the players are easier to read, and the field has gone back to the crayola design.

2005

YAA! This game is awesome! The soundtrack is a bit irritating, but the graphics are great (for this point in time). The backs of jerseys are very well defined, and franchise mode is really, really fun. The crowd is finally in focus, and the discussion about players holding their elbow during ANY injury comes into prominence once again.

2006

By gum, I think we've done it! The graphics of the sky are incredible! The soundtrack is immaculate, as it is headlined by Sam Spence and the Sounds of NFL Films. Franchise mode is uber-fun. The new vision cone was hard at first, but sometimes worked to my advantage. More times than not, though, it worked against me. The implementation of SS mode seems like a good idea...but it stunk. Players looks are pretty much up to the computer, and the highly touted NFL Street Player Upload was a huge bust, as any player uploaded has black skin in the game! I honestly do not care about the color of one's skin...but...my player isn't black! Oh well. I'm satisfied.

2007

Dum-Dah-Dah-DAH!!! Today marks the release of Madden '07. Now, we can see the hairs of Ol' Matt Hasselbeck's arm, as well as facial expressions and shadows and everything! Reggie Bush will overtake Mike Vick as the most exciting player to play as this season. In every speed related category, he is rated a 97 or higher. There are new additions to the game, such as "NFL Network". The game is a little slower to movements, probably due to the many options installed in this year's game. Speed is crucial this year, more so than ever. Overall, gamers should be satisfied as Madden continues the streak of addicting games.

There you have it! Madden has greatly improved from 1998 to now. My favorite saying has been and always will be "HEY! That guy looks like he got hit by a freight train!"

Annual tradition, my buddy back in PA has been playing it since he got it midnight last night (called me as he was opening it and he was shakingly excited). Although I just tried to call him to see how it is and he didn't answer!

Bought 07 this morning...did the obligatory fantasy draft and snagged Reggie Bush with my 2nd pick...ROY, 1500 yards, and he suffers a career ending knee injury in his third year. This game still cheats!

For me the best edition was 2004. Everything really seemed to come together while in 05 and 06 they seemed to be toying around with new modes and features.

I love comparing how those stats change over time. In 2000, Favre was 96. In 2003, he was 98. In 2005, he was 94. What is he in 2007? On 2005 it was too easy to take a poor QB, K or P and turn him into a 99. Both the K and P had their own drill, and the rest of the team you had to pick and choose.

I liked 2000 because if it was close to a 1st down, they bought on the Chain Gang. I've not seen it since. I hated the fact that in some of the early Madden's you didn't have all the players - e.g. you could draft "WR #84" or "QB #7". That was annoying. (In 2000, GB's "RB #33" was Ahman Green, hardly a nobody.

That's true in all games -- some players endorse other games/products and don't wish to endorse Madden as well.

Isn't there a NFL Player licence or something? In football (soccer) there is the FIFAProLicence, which is given to one football game. The EA Sports FIFA Series currently has it, but there is competition for it from Pro Evoultion. In other sports, e.g. Rugby, Golf, even Snooker, there is such a thing, and accordingly all the players are on there - with real names.

And I was drafting people with these names in Year 5 or so of the franchise mode! That's some great foresight if they can tell that in future players are going to endorse rival products!

I've been wondering whether to go out and grab Madden right away or wait a couple of weeks, but seeing the screen shot makes me want to run out and grab it now.

If you wait a month it might be cheaper. In Britain a month after a game is released the price (for PS2) drops from £40 to £30, but since it's a US game it'll only start off at about £30 and drop to £25, maybe as low as £20.

It usually starts at $50 here and the only time you see it drop is when the new one is close to coming out or when they got competition from ESPN's game that was only $20.

it depends. the gc version is 39, the ds and gameboy versions are 29, ps2 is 49, and i imagine xbox 360 is 59. i have the game, so drop me a note if you want a full description of the game. my favorite aspect is the draft. you can take players that would normally be taken in the first round in '06, way later in 07. like julius peppers, champ bailey, culpepper, etc. reggie bush is unstoppable. do NOT take him first or second or even third round. i believe i snagged him in the fourth or fifth.

Ok, for the screen shot of Madden 07, way to use a shot of the 360 version at an angle that NO ONE plays in. I have the XBOX version of Madden 07 and the graphics suck. The players look like they were out of the old Blitz games.....and why does Al Michaels and Madden have the same dull comments from 3 years ago? EA and Madden are sloppy and lazy. I hope EA never gets to use that NFL license again.

I liked the article but I have a complaint to the fans and this seems to be a common thought. Why do the graphics in a game matter more than gameplay? Madden 92 was one of the best ever.

thanks! well i wasn't really aiming towards the evolution of the gameplay, i was going for the evolution of the graphics over the ten year span. i wasnt implying that graphics matter more, i just thought that the graphics have changed drastically and it was worth noting!
