Pirates Organizational Tree

by user Timothy Moreland(Bball3345)

Will Young created an organizational tree for the Minnesota Twins at this site. Influenced by this, I decided to make a "tree" for the Pirates. It would be a neat idea if a fan of each team pitched in to make one of these for the team pages. There are also Yankees, Red Sox, and Padres available on the internet.

Where their Players Came From
Trade 9
Amateur Draft 6
Free Agent 4
Minor League Contract 3
Non-drafted Free Agent 2
Rule V Draft 1

You can find all of the trees here.

The Pirates, being a small-market team, rely heavily on the draft and making trades. They do not "buy" players like large-market teams. There is further analysis of how Rincon became Bay here.

Here is the 25-man roster and where they came from. If the "How Acquired" column has “Trade,” then the next column says who the Pirates traded to acquire that player. If the player in the “Root” column was also acquired via trade, then the next root column contains who the Pirates traded for that player, etc.

# NAME How Acquired Root Root^2 Root^3
55 Matt Capps 2002 Amateur Draft (Round 7)

My wife walked by as I was looking at this and asked, "Why would anyone want to make or read that?" I couldn't really explain it, but I find it very interesting. Great work!

I used baseballreference.com and went to the player pages. At the bottom of the page is transactions. The trading deadline deals aren't on there yet, so I used MLB.com.

Matt Capps was actually a 7th round pick of the 2002 amateur draft.
