- The first Major League Baseball All-Star game to be played indoors took place at the Astrodome in Houston, TX.

- Former Arsenal player Terry Neill is appointed manager of the club.

- Herschel Walker of the New Jersey Generals was named the Most Valuable Player in the United States Football League (USFL)
- Joe Namath signed a five-year contract with ABC-TV to provide commentary for "Monday Night Football".

- Mike Tyson was banned from the boxing ring and fined $3 million for biting the ear of opponent Evander Holyfield.

- Pete Sampras of the United States set a record when he won the men's singles tennis championship at Wimbledon. It was his 13th Grand Slam title.

- The MLB All-Star game ended in a 7-7 tie after 11 innings. Commissioner Bud Selig called the game after both team managers informed him that they had run out of players.

- Pittsburgh Pirate Randall Simon clubs one of the Brewers/Klement's Racing Sausages (the Italian to be exact) over the head with a wooden bat, sending the costumed person to the ground and setting off a chain reaction that also collects the Hot Dog. Simon will later be cited for disorderly conduct and fined $432 for the incident.
