5 Reasons Why The Yankess Should Not Trade For Santana

17

by Aprisco

I have to say, I'm a big Yankee fan and to me, getting Johan Santana would be a big mistake. Here's why:

1) We keep hearing that Santana is only 28 (he will be 29 before next season). While that's nice, he's already logged four 200+ innings seasons, plus playoffs (5 playoff starts). That's a lot of wear on the arm. He is coming off his worst season last year and the fact is, there is a history of power pitchers who log a lot of innings in their 20s, who cannot get it done into their 30s--see Fernando Valenzuela, Dwight Gooden, and Pedro Martinez, to name a few.  Santana needs his mid-90s fastball to complement his changeup. He doesn't really have an effective 3rd pitch.

2) I don't care how good you are, you do not give a pitcher a 6 year contract....ever. Why? See 1 above. Pitchers are always one more pitch away from mediocrity. Think about what an albatross this contract would be if Santana gets hurt, or starts losing velocity on his fastball. Yikes!

3) Phil Hughes might be better than Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees are making Chamberlain untouchable, but they are contemplating putting Hughes in the trade. Now, the Yankees scouts probably know more than me, but Phil Hughes looks like a quality starting pitcher. He made 13 starts for the Yankees, won 5 and pitched well in his only playoff appearance. He also was injured most of the season and seemed to get better as he got himself in shape. At the end of the year, he was the Yankees best pitcher. He can get by as a two pitch pitchers since he has great live movement on his fastball, something you cannot teach.  While everyone loves Joba, his fastball is flat and straight. He will need a third pitch as a starter and while I keep hearing he has four pitches, he never threw more than two as a reliever. He's never started a major league game. Plus you kill the bullpen if you move Chamberlain into the rotation.  Chamberlain setting up Mariano Rivera was the key reason the Yankees made the playoffs last year.  So while the Yanks would have Santana and Wang, the back end of their rotation would be really questionable. Hughes would win 15 games next year and would cost a lot less than Santana.

4) If you trade Melky Cabrera, the Yankees outfield defense becomes really bad. Johnny Damon in center and Hideki Matsui in left is a disaster.  Neither can throw, Matsui has no range. Neither could make it 150 games healthy. And while the Yankees have talented youngsters Brent Gardner and Jose Tabata, neither is major league ready. Tabata played in A-ball, and Gardner had 180 at bats total in Triple A in which he hit .260. It would be quite a gamble to start one of them in centerfield next year. There's always a potential trade for a centerfielder (Gary Matthews) or even a free agent (Aaron Rowand, Andruw Jones), but that's not the same as having the home grown Melky.

5) Most importantly, a trade such as this signals a return of Old George in the form of Hank Steinbrenner. Get the established stars for your own young talent. I have news for you Hank: IT NEVER WORKED. NEVER. The Yankees won four world championships because George allowed his baseball people to do their thing and develop home grown talent. They did not bring in stars, but tough, competitive and good players. Resigning A-Rod (no world championships) and gunning for Santana signals a return to the old ways and return to mediocrity.

Don't do it!

And who is Fernando Valueza? The Yanks are getting a steal. I don't understand what the Twins would want with either Coco Crisp or Melky Cabrera. These guys are not particularly good baseball players. So what the Yankees get is a pitcher in his prime, one of the top 3 in baseball, basically for a guy with the potential to be that. I'd take the guy who is there already for the guy who might get there eventually. Cabrera will be nothing in Minnesota.

Also, you talk about Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon? Johnny Damon was actually good at one point in time. Let's talk.. oh, I don't know... BOBBY ABREU.

Cabrera/Crisp would be pretty big upgrades over whoever Minny is currently employing at CF, and Melky is very cheap.

Melky is the classic player who was a mediocre prospect and thrived with the Yankees. I really don't believe in his talent at all.

Kenvin Brown comes to mind since he signed a 7 year contract with Dodgers for $105 million. Brown was 41-19 with Dodgers the first three years but then was 17-13 in the next two years then went to Yankees and was with Yankees in last two years of his contract posting a 14-13 record. So for $105 million he won 58 games for Dodgers in 5 years and 14 for Yankees in two years. When you consider Brown won at least 13 games three times with Dodgers he wasn't a complete washout but if Santana only pitches this well for a lot more money on a six year contract I doubt if Santana can match the numbers of Brown.

i think what makes this more interesting is that santana basically wants 25 mil a year...and even at 20, that gives the yankees practically 50-60 mil rapped up in 2 guys...that's more than probably 10 teams payrolls... nevermind the luxury tax costs the yankees will incur...

Agree, Hughes is probably the better starter than Chamberlain. Joba has a colt following right now though which Hughes doesnt.

I appreciate the editing Romiezzo and I was expecting it. I wrote this really early this morning before a 15k that I ran this morning. Johnny Damon cannot play centerfield full time. He showed last year he cannot stay healthy and he has no arm. The combination of him and Matsui would be a nightmare. I also cannot believe how underappreciated Melky is. Yankee fans are so spoiled. Most teams would take a centerfielder who is solid defensively with a great arm who can hit .300 and drive in 70 RBIs at 23 years old. Why do you think teams want to trade for him?

Anytime, Aprisco. You're absolutely right. Melky Cabrera, from what I've seen is definitely underappreciated when it comes to defense, by the fans as well as the coaches and players, which is probably why you see so many outfield assists with Melky.

Chamberlain has more upside, but farther to go and some injury questions. Hughes' ceiling is a bit lower, but he's more likely to reach his potential. Take your pick.

I see your point, but I guess for next year I'd rather have Hughes' 15 wins, Chamberlain setting up Rivera and Cabrera in center than Santana's 15-20, Chamberlain starting with no major league experience, no set up man and and a crappy outfield.

I wasn't really talking about the deal...I was just responding to the people who said Hughes is better than Joba. Santana's great, but I have to say, I don't think the Yankees really need him.

Chamberlain does not have more upside. He may rate a bit higher on the prospect lists right now but those are a reflection of what a player has done to this point. If you count future performance, than both Ian Kennedy and Hughes rank higher. Chamberlain is far from untouchable.

Chamberlain hasn't done more to this point...pretty much everybody I've seen says Joba has more upside than Hughes. They both definitely have much more potential than Kennedy.

The "they" I was referring to in that context would be Hughes and Chamberlain. If you're asking who I've seen that ranks the pitchers that way...Keith Law, most of the BA guys, at least one THT writer...most of the scouting/breakdown types I can find online.

Which is exactly what I said. BA will rank Joba higher now because he's had more ML success, but will use scouting reports on his future projectability. All of which rate Kennedy #1, Hughes #2 and Joba #3. Keith Law is an idiot.

What is it you see that makes you rank them that way? I'm not really trying to be argumentative anymore, just curious what your reasoning is.

They're not my rankings, these are from official scouting reports. No one was more surprised at what Chamberlain did this year than the Yankees themselves. They just needed a body for awhile and gave the kid a shot.

Trust me, there's alot more to prospect projections than listening to someone on talk radio or reading a fantasy report online.

I don't consider you argumentative, you're only going with the info you have, which is limited. And I'm not trying to be some know-it-all a-hole either, I respect your opinion.

And for the record, I've seen Hughes and Kennedy pitch in person and, of course, Chamberlain on TV. And there's alot of guys working the drive thru at Taco Bell who could throw 98, pitching is not just about speed. Kennedy is a Greg Maddux clone and Hughes is a combination of both a finesse pitcher and a power pitcher.

What I've said is just repeating what's been publicly stated by the Yankees tossed in with a bit of my own knowledge of the game and a bit of common sense, Chamberlain caught everyone by surprise last year by not only his performance but by being in the major leagues. He may have had the best short term impression but he doesn't have the longest term impact projection.

Chamberlain allowed one earned run in 24 innings last season, Brandon Webb had a 40 inning scoreless streak...as a starter. Which was more impressive? Webb, by a fackin' mile.

You know what the Yankees biggest concern is with Chamberlain? Well, I do. And they would rather it be someone else's problem.

I disagree with the statement that Kennedy is the next Greg Maddux...Maddux had once-in-a-generation command and control, so projecting anyone to that standard is an awfully bold statement.

What exactly was in those scouting reports? From what I've read, Chamberlain has a very good fastball and an excellent slider but still-developing command, while Hughes has an okay fastball, a great curve, an okay change and excellent command. From that, it would seem that Chamberlain, because of his slightly better stuff, has more potential, while Hughes, from his excellent command, has a better chance of being a good starter. I don't really have the capability to do any firsthand research...I'll look into the MLB.com stuff and see if I can find any video/charts on them.

Nothing that I'm saying has anything to do with what he did in 24 innings as a reliever.

this is jay100 here.are phil hughes and joba the only ones on the block that the twinks could actually grab? or is there potential for more prospects? If I were the yanks this deal would not be done his high end fastball is great to go along with his cartoon changeup but theres gotta be some where and tear on his arm but who doesnt want a 200+ inning guy. But for some reason i see him going the way of Barry Zito..lots of money lots innings(thats about all i can say about zito)like zito hes a 2 pitch pitcher with a fastball and curveball sure his gas his alot better then barry's but but lots of hitters are starting to figure it out check out his homeruns allowed stat from last year 33 compared to his former career high of 24 but again he logged a ton of innings. Keeping hughes and chamberlain only bolster the yanks lineup for years to come giving them a good closer/setup man and a number 1 starter with youth on there side i just dont see any positives other then u get a guy who can toss up 200 innings and get some k's keep the prospects and look like a baseball team not some kid who turns off trade rejection on mlb 07 like the yankees have been doing in the last couple of years.

Santana is absolutely nothing like Zito...Johan averages almost 100 more strikeouts a year in the same number of innings. Zito has a great curveball, but that's pretty much it...Santana has a ridiculous changeup, a good fastball, a decent slider, and excellent command.

after reading my article about barry zito and johan i apologize for my mistype kwitt i meant to say i can see him going the way of barry zito not that they were at all alike. zito is a fastball curveball guy and johan has a overpowering fastball what a f*c*in change up . but for some reason i think in the not so different future hes gonna be more of an innings logged pitcher instead of the best pitcher in the majors.
