50 Greatest NBA Players Ever

by user twins15

This is an idea I was sorta toying with for a while now... I feel like I don't know enough about NBA History, especially about a lot of the old NBA greats. So I did a little research, looked at some previous lists from others, and came up with my list of the 50 greatest NBA players ever.

So here's my list... this won't be the end of it, because I plan on writing up a post about each of the top 50 at some point, and I'll probably go through all of these guys and write things about them in random order, but I thought it'd be best to give the list first and write the posts later.

1. Michael Jordan
2. Larry Bird

4. Wilt Chamberlain
5. Bill Russell
6. Oscar Robertson
7. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Walton was considered, but I think he wasn't good enough and dominant enough for long enough. Only 468 career games, and in the games he played he only averaged about 28 MPG.

Bill Walton should be on the list around #35 because he won an MVP. I can't see how you can have Kobe up there who hasn't even won MVP instead of having Bill Walton who has been there and done that. Bill Walton is a legend.

As long as these aren't in actual order, I think it's a decent list. I think the NBA is the easiest to do this kind of list since there are far fewer players on a team and there haven't been a ton of challengers to this list in the last ten years. With kids coming into the league so early, they are equipped to become an All-time great.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with Kobe. I don't think he's played long enough yet to be considered one of the 50 best ever. I'm a little unhappy with Kidd, but I think his total body of work is better than Kobe's right now.

Cpcp is correct the NBA is the easiest sport to rank. Every NBA player does has the same job set list. They all rebound, shoot, pass. There are no true speciality positions like in football or baseball, so it becomes much easier to compile overall list that ranks everyone to ever play the game.

interesting to note that AI isn't on here, and kobe is. Kobe has a career 23.9 ppg, with 5.1 rpg, 4.5 apg, and 1.5 spg. AI, on the other hand, has been around the league the exact same amount of time as kobe, yet has a 28.0 ppg career avg, with 4.0 rpg, 6.1 apg, and 2.3 spg. if KG deserves to be on here, so does AI.

I'm a Sixers fan so I'm a huge AI fan, but I thought he didn't quite make the cut (though it was close). Obviously unbelievable scorer, but he's been a average/below average defender for the past few years now, and he is notoriously difficult to play with. I feel like Kobe at his peak is a more dominant player on both ends of the ball... same for KG (as well as being a great rebounder). As far as career stats go, I think Kobe's are obviously skewed a bit by his first years out of high school.

AI is still a great defender. a dropoff in defensive stats for AI is still better than kobe's defense. if you feel that kobe's stats are skewed due to his decision to declare early...it was his decision! nobody told kobe to declare early. you cant make an excuse like that for kobe. i feel that kobe at his peak is not a more dominant player on both ends of the ball. the stats absolutely do not prove that! the only way kobe makes the top 50 and ai doesnt is because of the rings. otherwise, they're seemingly equal

Defensively I see AI as more of a guy that will take lots of chances (and as a result, get steals), but he'll also be burned a lot. Looking at it, I think Kobe is a better lockdown defender, more efficient scorer, and better rebounder. Both are good passers... this isn't a knock on Iverson (he's actually my favorite player)... just respect for Kobe's game.

Ai's apg avg of 7.4 last season is better than kobe's 4.5. ai has outscored kobe in terms of ppg the last 3 seasons. i'll give you that kobe has more rebounds, but as far as blocks go, they're equal. ai got his team to the nba finals a few years back, without a legit sidekick. kobe had shaq. i like kobe more than ai, but i feel that ai should be in the top 50 as well.

The first thing I noticed was the omission of AI. Laughable. He's not only been a league MVP, perennial leading scorer and one hell of a warrior, but he is the franchise's most valuable player since Dr. J (sorry Charles). Barkley had a decent team around him. AI has been playing with stiffs and has beens his entire career. You have Pippen, Kobe, Kidd and Payton on your list. Absolutely insane to think they are better than AI. Maybe you were thinking of the scoring of Kobe, the assists of Kidd, the teamwork of Pippen and the defense of Payton. Contrary to popular belief, AI measures up in each of those player's best category. And...Pippen at 25?

I think Pippen's one of the most underrated guys... good shooter, rebounder, passer, and great defender. One of the best all-around players ever, and I think he's overlooked in a lot of ways because he did play with the best player ever, IMO. Iverson's my favorite player, but I guess I don't see how he's a better player than Barkley was. Maybe I've underrated Iverson so as not to appear too subjective, which any list like this will be to some degree, but I just don't think he quite makes the top 50 at this point.

You omitted the man with the second most championship rings (as a player) in history (10—and no one else has more than 8)....a man hwo was asbolutely indispensible in winning the great majority of the Celtics 8 in a row and 11 in 13....a man who was noted for his clutch shooting...a man who arguably played his position better than anyone else in history except West, Jordan, and his teammate Havlicek. Just because he's quiet doesn't mean a man can't be a leader. Just ask Bill Russell and John Havlicek who was the one man they wanted to take the big shot at championship crunch time. You omitted Sam Jones. Earl Monroe? Excellent player. But no Sam Jones. Tilt.

Kobe has three rings an shouldve won a mvp award. Allen Iverson has no ring and has only made it to the finals once. But at the same time deserves to be on the list a little more than KG. Even though KG for a while was the best and most dominant player in his position. And i have to disagree with the order. The players are right (besides what i just mentioned) but the order should be changed around a bit. Specifically Shaq.

I agree with most of it. Kobe is overrated and AI is underated. If allen iverson was as tall as kobe, AI would be a lot better. I also think Shaq should not be on the list because the reason why Shaq is so good is because he is fat and he fouls everyone just so he can get an open look at the basket and hope to make on the 10th try.

I have a lot to say! First of all, OF COURSE Tim Duncan belongs on the list. Kidd, Kobe, KG do not. Jason Kidd would be there except that he's a terrible shooter, and that doesn't cut it if your a point guard. Aside from these, here is my list of who should not be on the list. I'll start with the two most overrated players in the history of the game: Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing. Sir Charles could shoot and rebound, but he absolutely ruined an offense. Either Charles took the shot himself or he ruined the whole deal. Once he touched the ball the offensive play was DONE. He either held it too long, or dribbled too long, or ignored the scheme. Kobe Bryant has the same disease. Jerry Colangelo said, after they got rid of him in Phoenix that "now finally we might be able to run our offense." He was also uncoachable, a locker room lawyer, and never played a lick of defense in his life. Patrick Ewing might as well have been 6'8" because all he did was shoot 12 foot jumpers. He wasn't tough in the paint either offensively or defensively, and couldn't hit a clutch shot to save his life. Other overrateds who I'd like to see removed are David Robinson, Pete Maravich (carnival act), Walt Bellamy, George Gervin, Bob McAdoo (the last four were just shooting machines, did absolutely nothing else, and didn't necessarily do the right thing for the team). Whom to add? As always, Dennis Johnson is missing from a "Top" list, yet he was one of the greatest do-everything players. Shooting, scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, CLUTCH PLAY in big games (unlike Carl Malone!). What's not to love about DJ? He was John Havilcek supersized, yet never gets credit. Believe it or not, I would put Dennis Rodman on this list for sure. Granted he was no "O", but he was so dominant defensively and on the boards and as a team player that he gets a nod. I agree that Iverson should be there too.

You have a big mouth! David Robinson is not overrated, Charles Barkely is not overrated, and neither is Patrick Ewing. To start off, David Robinson could score, rebound, block, post, and could hit the clutch shot so he deserves to be in the list. Next, Charles Barkely could score like it was nothing and he could rebound too. He led his team to the Championship and lost but he gave it an effort facing the greatest player in the game Michael Jordan. Patrick Ewing, yeah he hit the 12foot jumpers but just because he does that you say he might as well be 6-8. What about Shaq, he can hit the little jumpers but are you going to tell Shaq that he should be 6-8. Ewing didn't have to hit the clutch shot because he had Latrell Spreewll on his team and they also had Larry Johnson so why would Ewing need to take the clutch shot when his team is there to back him up. Oh and by the way "Karl Malone" is not overrated. the reason why I put his name in quotation marks is because you spelled his name with a "C" instead of a "K".

arguments dont hold water...no consistency...you would take Charles Barkley off in part for only being an offensive player, but then would put Rodman on for playing no offense? Dennis Johnson played with the greatest, that doesnt make him the greatest. If you put him on then you might as well put every starter to ever play on a Celtics championship team for the past 50 yrs. RIP DJ, but he was a 4th option and a defensive gem who could hit an open shot...pretty standard.

Further, I agree with previous writer that Sam Jones should be on the list. Earl the Pearl is questionable. Loved him, he was flashy, etc, but maybe not top 50. Walton is an anomoly, granted he didn't play long in the NBA, but when he did he just won a championship. He was probably the greatest center ever in college, let's cheat a little and give him some props for that. Dave Cowens is also questionable as top 50, as is Moses Malone. Both big-time Blue Collar players, like Ben Wallace. All necessary to win a championship, but not franchise players. Some bloggers are trying to compare centers with other positions, and I think it's impossible to do that. Centers should be compared to other centers period. ArmchairGM is correct to place Chamberlain and Russell close to each other, but I must disagree with putting Wilt first. Russell was BY FAR the greatest center ever. He could do everything, including run the floor, handle the ball, defend, pass, score AND make free-throws. I would take both Russell and Jabbar over either Shaq or Wilt because of that huge difference, the ability to make free throws. Further, neither Wilt nor Jabbar nor Shaq ran the floor like Russell, on every single play. In my opinion, Oscar Robertson and Jordan are the two greatest players ever. Oscar could, and did, do everything Michael did with the addition of averaging a triple double for an entire season. Noone has ever done that, and that was back when assists were not generously credited (or not at all for the first part of his career). Most modern fans never saw Oscar play, but be assured that he was as dominant as Jordan with the addition of passing a little more and scoring a little less than MJ. Pippen is deserving, as one blogger stated, and so is Reggie Miller. Some critics say that Reggie is a one-tricker, but frankly he is one of the top 10 greatest clutch performers ever, and an amazing team-first player . . . end of story. That differs from the likes of McAdoo, Gervin, Maravich, Bryant, Barkley, etc, who were/are ridiculously selfish, if not hedonistic. Iverson, to me, is excluded from this group of hedonists in that he does play both ends of the floor. Considering he's a little guy, he welcomes physical challenge unlike any other.

In my opinion your list is terrible. There is no way you can have jordan number one. Chamberlain and robertson were both better. The top three players are chamberlain, oscar, and then jordon. No one has ever dominated any sport the way wilt did. He averaged over 20 boards for at least 6 seasons. He averaged 30 points and over 20 boards agains the #5 player on your list. He averaged 50.4 points for a whole season. Over 3/4's of the players on your list have never hit the 50 point bench mark once. Many say he is not a complete player, but he also averaged 8.6 assists for one season. That is for a center. The most jordon ever averages was 8. the most boards he ever averaged where 8. Wilt was also a great defender . It is speculation but it is said that he and russell both averaged about 8 blocks a game. Number 2 on the should be oscar. He averaged a trible double for a whole season. A whole freaking season. Jason kidd does it about 10 times a year and they make such a big deal about it. kidd gets 10 10 10...oscar got 30 12 11 for a whole season. micheal Jordon should be number 3. bird is not even the best player to play for the celtics. Russell is should be number 4 on the list...a few other notes. Shaq should move down. Hakeem olajuwon should move up. stockton move up. bird below magic. david robinson up. garnett up. pippen down. and maybe mutumbo and walton shoul be on the list

why dont you try to find that guy in Anderson, Indiana or wherever and then we can have this conversation. That is ridiculous. Shaq is one of the most incredible athletes of our time. To be that tall and big and move as well as he does is VERY rare. How many other 7 foot, 330 lb players made it to the NBA. Not many, because normally if you are that size, you are sloppy or uncoordinated. Oh wait, I forgot Dwayne Shinztus...now there is an athlete!

MAny things wrong with this list.... Tim Duncan has three rings, three finals MVP's and two regular season MVP's. He is the GREATEST 4 to ever play the game. He should be in the top 15. Magic is greater than Bird, therefore he should be number 2. And the major crime is putting Dominique Wilkins in the top 40 when we all know full well that his career is not greater than that of Allen Iverson. AI may be the greatest small guard to ever play the game, and he's not even on the list.

He played in the golden era of the NBA with about 60% of the players in anyones top 50...Magic, Jordan, Isaiah, Bird, Dr. J, Drexler, Bernard King, Shaq, Robinson, Ewing, Kareem, K.Malone, Moses Malone, Olajuwon, etc...and held his own. Only reason he wasnt all-nba first team all those years was because of Bird and Dr. J. He has one of the highest career scoring averages and went toe to toe with the leagues best Small Forwards ever. No way he shouldnt have been in the top 25. Only reason he wasnt one of the NBA 50 greatest is because of all the Celtics sympathizers that voted.

Bird 4. jordan 5. magic johnson. i admitt kobe is a ball hog, but thats only cuz he HAS to be. his team is one big group of 2nd string chances. kobe is no doubt the best shooter in the game EVER. defense can be a little shaky at times, but he still can dunk better than jordan. no matter what all u older people say. wow he dunked from the free throw. so can kobe, with a 360, or maybe an under the leg, MJ is rediculously overrated and kobe is also a little overrated, but he still deserves a number 2 spot.

Thank you Anonymous #42. Finally someone recognizes Kobe Bryants worth. At the end of it all, when Kobe is done playing, he is going to be considered one of the top 5 of all time. He does damage every night out. No one can stop him. His dunks are tops in the league all time, except for Vince Carter. He has limitless range and the best one on one moves of all time. If he had just one sidekick, he could take his team back to the champsionship. Every champion for the past 40 years had someone great playing with him, so I dont want to hear the "he had Shaq" argument. Jordan had Pippen, Magic had Worthy and Kareem, Bird had McHale and Parrish, Dr.J had Moses, and Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, and Cowens had each other at different times. Not even Jordan notched 81 pts, and we all know Jordan wasnt shy about shooting. Kobe's offensive game is pure artwork and is beautiful to watch. It isnt street like AI and it isnt boring like Bird, it is a blend of new and the old and he transcends all eras of hoop. Mark my words, we are watching one of the greatest atheltes of American history.

AF#74, first off, this article was made in 2006 NBA offseason. This means LeBron only played 3 seasons (at the time). Would you seriously put anyone in a Top 50 All Time list if they've played in the NBA for only 3 seasons? I wouldn't...

Kobe could be another O.J. Simpson for all I care, but the fact remains that he's on this list... well deserved. He will (most likely) become my #2 shooting guard once his career is over (behind Michael Jordan).

And your last comment? Well, I'm going to skip it, as Biedrens, Davis, and Moon shouldn't even be considered for a list like this.

You forgot Bob McAdoo, Sidney Moncrief, and Dan Issel. Duration and quality of play count more than championships.

I'm always a Wilt first guy.

The difference between Jordan and Chamberlain was that the NBA altered the rules to make it easier for Jordan to dominate the game.

In Wilt's case they altered the rules in an effort to prevent him from dominating the game.

He led the league in assists one year as a Center, just to prove that he could do whatever he wanted to on a basketball court.
