3 Moves That Need To Be Made

11
Vote

by Joga bonita

New York Mets:

need: offense
move: add Teixeira and get rid of Delgado ASAP. Delgado has been a bust since joinging the Mets
and wont be getting better any time soon and the only thing that could
possible see him regain any bit of the form he once had would be a move to the AL so ship him out
and bring in Teixeira.

New York Yankees:

need: bullpen
move: GET RID OF FARNSWORTH TODAY. this guy has been a headache from day one and
needs to be thrown out the door no matter how much of his salery we have to pay off.
bring in any 2 of following group: Chad Qualls, Salomon Torres, Jon Rauch, Chad Cordero and Eric Gagne.

San Diego Padres:

need: offense
move: Adam Dunn, Mark Grudzielanek or any other hitter that is availiable.
A team with an ERA of 3.42 and two of the top SP in baseball (Chris Young and Jake Peavy)
and one of the best closers of all time should be able to win a ton of games...
but no not with an offense that ranks a mesily 16th in BA and 14 in RS.
Add hitting and this team will be the one to beat not only in the NL but in all of baseball.

The Padres did make a move. Too bad all they got in return from the Brewers was more pitching. Suckers.

i agree with all the moves except that i dont believe the mets should unload delgado... texeira wouldn't be enough of an upgrade over delgado for them to deal for him... imagine the pads with a bat like dunn wow

I agree with everything but the Mets needing to get rid of Delgado. He is finally starting to hit. Plus even with his struggles he still is on pace for over 25 homeruns and close to 100 RBI. If he continues to hit like he has since the break he will surpass both marks. Keep Delgado and if you want sign Tex as a FA when Delgado's contract is up. Also the Mets need somewhere to put the guy from the trio of Milledge, Gomez and Fernando that gets squeezed out of the OF.

I wrote something similiar http://www.armchairgm.com/index.php?title=Trade_DEAD-line. The Delgado thing is interesting, but I think the Mets are fine right now. What the Yankees really need to do is get rid of Igawa.

Teixeira is no superstar...a vastly overrated player in my book, but I don't see how you can say he's not an upgrade over the washed-up Delgado. Delgado has looked lost at the plate very often this year. The end is near for him...dump him while you can. No longer a major threat in anyone's lineup.

Delgado wasn't a bust at all last year. He was good, but not great.

oh, and there's no way that a Farnsworth out, Qualis/Gagne in move makes the Yankees appreciably better. The cost involved -- probably three decent-plus prospects -- makes that even worse.

Let's not forget that Scott Boras represents Gagne...which means whoever gets him (if he's moved) will overpay

Yea, but it still pisses me off that the Yanks paid so much for him and he hasn't produced. They can't even use him as a trading token because teams have seen how bad he's been.

Yea, Johnny's arm is too weak to play outfield and the Yanks have been in too many 'on the corner's' situations. You need guys with strong arms in those situations.

Another guy in pinstripes overpaid and producing absolutely nothing. But hey, wasn't it cool for you Yank fans to rip the caveman away from Fenway?

You'd have to give up Milledge plus something else to get Teixeira, and he's really not that much of an upgrade over Delgado, who you'll get nothing for because of his salary. What a *coincidence* - the Padres have a glaring need for offense, and they just happen to play in the worst hitters' park in the NL. Adjust for that and they're slightly below average in runs scored...still not a strength, but not as big a need as people make it out to be.

playing in a bad hitting park does not make up for the 63 runs the padres are behind the 15th (middle) team in MLB and the 176 they are behind the best run scoring team

Well, the AL teams get to hit with a DH, so comparing the Pads to AL teams isn't fair at all.

Here's the math: PETCO's park factor is currently about .860, meaning that for every 100 runs scored at a neutral park, 86 runs will be scored at PETCO. Sometimes you get screwy numbers with just a half-season's worth of data, but this is right in line with the last couple years, so we can assume the number's good.

If we assume that the Padres have played half their games at PETCO, and their road games average out to be at neutral parks, then the overall park factor for all their games this year is (.86+1)/2 = .930. So, to calculate how many runs the Padres would have scored at a neutral field, we multiply their actual total to this point by (1/.93) = 1.075. They've scored 416 runs thus far, which comes out to be basically 447 park-adjusted runs. That puts them at 11th in the league, and only one run behind the Astros. Again, it's still not a strength, but people tend to just look at the raw number and assume the Padres' offense is awful.

This is a very crude way of doing things - first of all, I'm assuming the Padres play all their road games in a neutral park, and secondly, I'm not park-adjusting the other teams' runs - but it's a start.
