30 Franchise MLB Players

21
Vote

by Falcon02520

I want to know who is the guy who makes the franchise go?  The guy who leads his team, who wants to win, and who simply does it for more than just the money. I have compiled a list of one player per team who is not nesessarilly the captain, but doesn't have to be the best player. Simply a leader, with spirt and pride, who gives it his all, and could be the face of a franchise.

(These teams are in order by division.  It has nothing to do with standings or rankings or anything else.)

Boston Red Sox- Jason Varitek (The captain; the leader of the pitching staff, which has done pretty darn well; sorry Big Papi)

Toronto Blue Jays- Roy Halladay (He is a gamer)

New York Yankees- Derek Jeter (Not expecting any arguements here)

Baltimore Orioles- Nick Markakis (Great young talent; can and will do what he can to win)

Tampa Bay Devil Rays- Carl Crawford (Simply one of the best outfielders in the game; even though he's in Tampa, he wants to win)

Detroit Tigers- Ivan Rodriguez (That pitching staff was young, unexperienced, and a mess before he saved them)

Cleveland Indians- Grady Sizemore (Will go over, under, around, and even through walls to get an out; I once read he will be a Jeter type of leader over the years)

Minnesota Twins- Johan Santana (Best pitcher in baseball; Wants to win in Minnesota, but has said that if they don't show they want to win, he will leave for a team that does)

Kansas City Royals- (Sorry KC fans, I couldn't decide so I'm taking the Grounds Keeper; the field looked to be in good condition last I saw)

Chicago White Sox- Josh Fields (He may not be yet, but Fields is going to be a great player and leader; it'll be a few years)

Los Angeles Angels- Vladimir Guerrero (He can single handedly carry an offense)

Seattle Mariners- Ichiro (One of the best singles hitters everywhere; very hard worker)

Oakland Athletics- (I need help on this one, because I got no idea)

Texas Rangers- Michael Young (He has been a good leader and productive hitter who produces anywhere in a lineup)

New York Mets- Jose Reyes (Any questions?)

Atlanta Braves- Chipper Jones (When healthy; he took a paycut to bring in Tim Hudson a few years back (when Tim was really good))

Philadelphia Phillies- Chase Utley (Inspired me to do this list; hustles everywhere; one of the best players in the game; talented and still works harder than anyone (even when his hand was broken, he took ground balls))

Washington Nationals- Ryan Zimmerman (Great young player, and could be great for a long time)

Florida Marlins- Hanley Ramirez (As a Boston fan, I miss him dearly)

St. Louis Cardinals- Albert Pujols (Again, no statement needed)

Milwaukee Brewers- Prince Fielder (Hard worker even though he'd still make an error fielding a ball that wasn't moving)

Pittsburgh Pirates- IDK

Cincinnati Reds- Ryan Freel (Willing to give up his starting job for a couple of extra wins)

Chicago Cubs- Zambrano? Soriano? Cubbies, you tell me.

Houston Astros- Craig Biggio (Long time "What ever it takes" player; switch positions many times)

Los Angeles Dodgers- Russell Martin (A good guy who (if he isn't already) is going to be the best cathcer in the game)

San Diego Padres- Jake Peavy (Pitches with passion and makes every pitch count)

Colorado Rockies- Matt Holliday (Is leading a bad team to a respectable .500 record; Todd Helton never really carried a team like this)

San Francisco Giants- Omar Vizquel (One of my favorites All-time)

Arizona Diamondbacks- Eric Byrnes (What is more impressive than running through a wall to win a game?  Whatever is Byrnes will do it)

These are my opinions.  And, this list may only make sense in my mind.  But, I posted it anyway.

Zambrano for the Cubs. As for the White Sox, I'd say Mark Buehrle or Paul Konerko.

I think for the Cubs you have to go with Derrek Lee. They really missed him in 2006 when he broke his wrist, and went down the drain. Zambrano is a solid leader, but I am reluctant to anoint a guy who throws every fifth day a true franchise player.

No doubt. If he'd only pitch like he were pitching in a series clinching game every time he took the mound, he would be amazing. Sometimes he doesn't do that against teams he should dominate (like KC or TEX)

Might I suggest Mike Lowell for the Red Sox? Leads the team in RBIs. Plays solid defense, speaks Spanish and English fluently and is one of the most respected guys in the clubhouse (we're told)

Actutally, if Bonds was a better teamate, he would help other players get better by showing them stuff and talking with them. Plus I am not talking who is the most productive player on each team, but who is a LEADER on each team. Bonds is most productive, but he couldn't lead a dog away from Michael Vick.

Your talking about the guy that "makes the team go"? What does that mean if not "the guy that contributes the most to the team's chance of winning"? This ain't a social club. We don't keep guys around for there personality. Its, can they play? Bonds plays better than anyone else on that damn team.

The only reason they have a bunch of old vets is to handle the media when it comes to talking about Bonds. They feel they have to be an older team to interact with Bonds. They are going away from that now with Lincicum and Cain leading the way.

When Barry Bonds knees heal and he can track down hard to catch fly balls we can call him a leader (Maybe). The fact of the matter is, he is a distraction to the team and he can't play defense. Also, I do believe the leader of your team should be able to play back to back games.

Pirates: Would you say Tom Gorzelanny, Ian Snell, or Jason Bay? Personally, I'd go with Gorzelanny. (13-7), 3.50 ERA, 1.285 WHIP. He's a good reason why the Pirates are still battling for a place besides last place for the last quarter or so of the season.

Might you reconsider the Twins and select Torii Hunter. He gets the team pumped up by his defense, batting, and entertaining his teammates with his jokes. Johan Santana is the face of the Twins, but in my opinion, I don't think he cares much for the Twins anymore, since he doesn't like it there...

Joe Mauer is and will definitely be the key for the Twins to win a lot more ball games. In my opinion, because he was injured, I feel that the Twins were out a long time ago. When he came back, they started to win more with his tremendous defense and bat to go along with it. He's a tough player with a lotta heart and soul for the game. He kinda reminds me of Russell Martin, but in a different way.

Orioles: Brian Roberts, Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejada(?)

Devil Rays: Scott Kazmir, B.J. Upton

Tigers: Curtis Granderson, Justin Verlander

Indians: Victor Martinez, CC Sabathia

Twins: Torii Hunter (No Carlos Silva)

White Sox: Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, Jermaine Dye (?) probably not

Royals: Gil Meche? Mark Teahan? Mark Grudzielanek?

Rangers: Anyone but Sosa. jk. Dunno anyone else but Young who would make the list

A's: Eric Chavez, Dan Haren

Mariners: Kenji Johjima, Felix Hernandez, JJ Putz

Angels: John Lackey, K-Rod, Chone Figgins

Braves: Brian McCann, Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, Mark Teixeira, Andruw Jones (?)

Mets: David Wright, John Maine, Billy Wagner

Phillies: Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard (Utley is superior though, by FAR!!)

Marlins: Miguel Cabrera

Nationals: Dmitri Young

Cardinals: Chris Duncan, (Chris Carpenter if you count him), Scott Rolen

Cubs: Zambrano, Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee

Brewers: (Ben Sheets if you count him)

Reds: Ken Griffey Jr., Adam Dunn,

Pirates: Gorzelanny, Snell, Bay

Astros: Lance Berkman, Roy Oswalt, Carlos Lee

Rockies: Todd Helton, Garret Atkins (but like Falcon said, doesn't match to what Holliday is doing right now)

Dodgers: Brad Penny

Padres: Chris Young (who else?)

DBax: Brandon Webb

Giants: Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum could be later on

How's that? You guys can take your picks from here.

Devil Rays - I know why you'd say Carl Crawford, one could even vote for BJ Upton this season (they are miserable without him in the lineup) but the team revolves around Carlos Pena this year - Carlos' awesome attitude and positive clubhouse energy AND his year at the plate have been unbelievable. CC isn't the leader you think he is - he might be the face of the franchise, but he says it himself, he doesn't lead because he's learning the game right along side all of the young players (many of whom will be bigger stars than he is).

I think there are a lot of players that can be on the list right now. They have passion for the game, but the thing is they don't have much experience, nor do they have any talent. Mark Grudzielanek, Alex Gordon, Gil Meche, Zach Greinke, Joe Buck, and Mark Teahan could all be in there in my opinion.
