300 !!!

Congratulations, Tom Glavine, on becoming the 23rd(and last ?) member of the 300 wins club!! The bullpen, of course, had to make it interesting - isn't it about time to accept that Mota was a product of steroids and move on - but you got the win. Of course, I address this right to Mr. Glavine, as I am sure that he reads my blog.

I'm quite sure all the guys on the team do. Why wouldn't they? You see my point, don't you? So, hey to Carlos and Jose and Carlos and David and Luis and Billy and Aaron and Ruben and Marlon and Paul and Ramon and Brian and Pedro and Oliver and Tom and John and Jorge and Aaron and Orlando and Damion and Moises and Scott and Shawn and Lastings and David and oh, Guillermo, you might want to skip what's inside the parenthesis up there, my friend. Now, what else do I have to say? Nice series in Wrigley, except for Saturday, of course.

What happened to John Maine? I mean, he got robbed on the third out, but shoot, you gotta recover better than that, don't you? Not that I'm one to talk, after that call I couldn't work the remote, so I certainly don't think I could have pitched to professional hitters. Perhaps I should just shut the hell up, and hope that Johnny Maine will bounce back. Big series ahead withe the Braves. And here's a note to the Braves, as I'm sure they read my blog as well, you guys shouldn't worry so much about winning, just come on up to New York and have fun, okay. Just enjoy yourselves.

I think 300 the movie was more exciting...as gloomy as it sounds, Glavine will prolly be the last pitcher in history to win 300 games...

I disagree that we'll never see it happen again, but it will take quite a while. Most of the guys that are anywhere close are too old to get there, but the extended careers of pitchers lately should do enough to counteract the effects of pitch counts and the increasing role of relief pitching for at least one of the young guys out there, like Santana, Peavy or Willis.

Here is my favorite reaction:

WAYNE GRETZKY

"Congratulations on your 300th win. I'm so very proud of you and I want the people of New York to know and baseball fans across America to realize that you were drafted ahead of Brett Hull and Luke Robitaille. Had you chosen hockey maybe in 1993 the Kings would have won the Stanley Cup. You were the missing link. Congratulations!"

I think the "Last pitcher to win 300" is getting too much play. This is just a situation where currently most of the pitchers who are close are too old (perhaps Johnson has a chance). I looked at a list of 300 winners on Wikipedia and (correct me if I am wrong, it is Wikipedia) there was a gap of 13 years between Nolan Ryan winning his 300th in 1990 and Clemens winning his in 2003. There was a group of 300 winners in the 1980's but before that there was a 19 year gap between Early Wynn (1963) and Gaylord Perry (1983).

To continue, 300 wins by year:

(1888,1890,1890,1891,1892,1900,1901,1912,1915,1920,1924,1941,1961,1963,1982,1983,1985,1985,1986,1990,2003,2004,2007)

Actually when you look at the entire time period 1888 thru 2007, 1980 thru 1990 seems more of an aberration than normal, 6 of 23 occurred in that time period. 5 occurred in 1888-1892, which leaves only 12 over the other 105 years.
