2nd half predictions: Who takes the NL West?

July 13th, 2007

So the Dbacks literally and figuratively have limped into the second half of the season. They can’t score any runs…and they haven’t. But as it turns out, scoring runs seems to be a problem for every team in the NL West…As we enter into the second half to the season, bar 1 day, who do you think will take the crown in the NL West?

I think the Dodgers are most poised to take the division title, with its current roster. I honestly don't think that they Padres will stand pat with their lineup as is. They are getting no production out of their hitters whatsoever. The Dodgers aren't much better, but still, better. I'd look for San Diego to make a deal for a bat sometime this month.

Hate to go against my preseaon pick of Arizona, but I don't see how Peavy and Young aren't going to lead San Diego right into October.

The Dodgers take the NL West or take the NL Wild Card, they are too good to be left out of the MLB playoffs this season and for seasons to come. Diamondbacks are relying on youngsters who havent played seasons this long, so i think they will stuggle at the end. As for the Padres they are a really good team as well, and i think it may be wire-to-wire with them and the Dodgers, but whoever doesnt win the NL West between those two will win the NL Wild Card. GO DODGERS!!!

Well, the "Big 3" in the NL West are not doing so well when it comes to producing runs. I believe that the Dodgers will definitely come on top. They're 50-40 right now, and the Pads are in 1st right now with 49 wins and 39 losses. Even though they have the best RS/RA ratio (377 runs scored to 306 runs allowed) are you seriously going to rely on two pitchers to do all of the work for you? I honestly think that since the Dodgers have scored 409 runs (32 more runs than the Pads), the Dodgers will be a better team offensively. It's just bad luck that they've had. Jason Schmidt hasn't been doing well, and neither has Wilson Betemit, compared to last year. But, like Aharner, I don't see how a team can be relied on two pitchers to get them to the playoffs. Now, if they get some offense before the trade deadline, the Pads will be my pick. Colorado, a team that is only 4.5 games behind LA and SD, if they get some pitching, they will do really well. They have scored 438 runs, which is 2nd most in the NL, only behind Philadelphia, but their pitching is natrocious; they've surrendered 444 runs, which is 40 more than any other team in the NL west. If they can just get some pitching in, they'll definitely be a better contender than the DBAX, and even the Pads, depending on what both teams get before the deadline...

I don't feel like doing the math, but the Padres' offense is probably as good as the Dodgers' when you factor in that the Dodgers play in a slightly hitter-friendly park, while the Padres play in the extremely pitcher-friendly PETCO.

Pitching gets it done and the Padres have two of the best in the game. They definatly need to add another bat though.
