First, meet Mike Flynt who is 59 years young. Mike is playing football for his alma mater after a 37 year layoff. Mike played football for division III college, Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas. Mike originally played college ball there back in ' 69 & '70 and was a captain. Mike was involved in a fight at school one night and was kicked off the team. It has bothered him for 37 years. He returned to Sul Ross for graduate studies and learned he was still eligible to play football. On a dare from a old teammate, Mike tried out and actually made the team. This past Saturday Mike became the oldest person to ever play college football and he will continue to play for the remainder of the season. People from across the U.S. came to see Flynt play after hearing of his story. Mike soon developed a fan club from California, Arkansas, Louisiana and Florida. In front of a packed stadium they saw Flynt take part in 9 offensive plays, including the game winning field goal after 3 over-times. Flynt played high school ball in Texas at Odessa Permian ( of "Friday Night Lights" Fame) where he helped Odessa Permian win their first of many state titles in '65.
If you are a fan of pro Football, especially within the past 22 years, then you have heard of Vinny Testaverde. Vinny signed with the Carolina Panthers a week ago, beginng his 22nd year in the NFL at the age of 43, turning 44 next month. Carolina is the 8th team he has played for in his career. Prior to signing with Carolina, Vinny had previously played for Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Baltimore, NY Jets, Dallas, and New England. On Sunday, Testaverde became the oldest player in NFL history to win a game. Vinny completed 20 of 33 pass attempts for 206 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Carolina's win over Arizona 25-10. Defying the odds and the optimism of reporters who prior to game time were making jokes about his start.
God bless Mike & Vinny for their win for the ages. They give new meaning to the phrase "Live long & play hard."
