[edit] Format

The format for 2007 is a revision on that used in 2006 with 16 riders taking part in each Grand Prix and over the course of 20 heats each rider will race against every other rider once. The top 8 scorers advance to a semi-final and from each semi-final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final.

All rides now count towards Grand Prix points totals, including the semi-final and final, which counts double (6-4-2-0) and therefore the maximum points for a single GP is 24 (5x heat wins, semi final win and final win). This scoring revision was introduced as a result of comments made during 2006 that the 4 finalists received too many points compared to the losing semi-finalists who in turn received little benefit compared to, say, the 9th placed non-qualifier. Also, this format means that the winner of each Grand Prix may not be the rider who scores most GP points from each race.

[edit] Qualification

There were 16 drivers in the 2007 season, of which 15 are permanent, and 1 is a wildcard. Each Grand Prix has two track reserves too. The Series also has racing reserves incase of retirement, or injury.

The riders that qualified for the 2007 Speedway Grand Prix season did so in the following way (and were assigned each particular bike number accordingly).

[edit] Speedway Grand Prix Qualifiers

The top three positions qualified. They were:

14 Flag of Poland Rune Holta
15 Flag of Denmark Hans Andersen

[edit] The top 8 from the 2006 Speedway Grand Prix season

1 Flag of Australia Jason Crump
2 Flag of the United States Greg Hancock
3 Flag of Denmark Nicki Pedersen
4 Flag of Sweden Andreas Jonsson
5 Flag of Australia Leigh Adams
6 Flag of Denmark Hans Andersen
7 Flag of Slovenia Matej Zagar
8 Flag of Poland Tomasz Gollob

Because Andersen had already qualified for the 2007 season based on his 2006 position (he filled in for the retiring Tony Rickardsson half way through the season), he was assigned the Number 6. This enabled the ninth placed rider in 2006 to qualify, as the Number 9.

9 Flag of Poland Jaroslaw Hampel

[edit] Nominations

Series promoters held nominations for the final four rides in the 2007 season.

10 Flag of Sweden Antonio Lindback
11 Flag of the United Kingdom Scott Nicholls

20 Flag of Finland Kaj Laukkanen
21 Flag of Denmark Charlie Gjedde

Bold names denote regular Speedway Grand Prix riders - all others are either wildcards, or track reserves.
Bold scores denote that the rider won that particular Grand Prix.

The top 8 riders automatically qualify for the 2008 Speedway Grand Prix season.
