2007 Detroit Lions Preview

As a long suffering Detroit Lions fan I have very little optimism about the upcoming season. My best guess is that they will win either 3 or 4 games. However, if the stars align just right and there is a miracle of all miracles they might win 7 or 8 games. The odds aren't very good, but stranger things have happened.

I know I sound like a Cubs fan, but hey, they are tied for first place right now. I have to look for hope somewhere.

I recently read a Sporting News article that pretty much said the same thing I did. The magazines official prediction was the Lions would go 5-11 and finish fourth in the NFC North. Which, by the way, I thought was a pretty good prediction. The author finished the article by saying that if everything goes 100% right, they Lions could squeak by with 8 wins. This is a professional, not some over-optimistic Lions fan that is dying for a win.

I know the Lions only won 3 games last year, and that it is almost unfathomable to think that they could win an additional 5, but Calvin Johnson gives me hope. If you look at the average score for the Lions last year they lost 25-19. That is only a margin of 6 points. If the Lions could have put together an additional TD here and there they could have turned around quite a few games.

Case-and-point: The Christmas Eve game against the Bears. The Bears were a tough team last year and ended up playing in the Super Bowl, and the Lions had a great opportunity to beat them. In the last seconds of the game, Kitna threw a pass to Mike Williams that would have resulted in a TD and the win for the Lions, if he had only caught the ball. I don't think anybody in their right mind believes that Calvin Johnson would drop that kind of ball.

Mike Williams' game losing drop only goes to show how poor the Lions were in the Red Zone last year. From what I could find the Lions went 17-42 (40%) while being in the Red Zone last year. If that number increases at all because of the presence of Calvin Johnson the Lions win-loss record should reverse a little bit.

Even Roy Williams commented to the media last year that he was shocked that he didn't get used in the Red Zone last year. Unless the Lions are complete morons (which isn't too far off) they can't avoid but to use Roy Williams or Calvin Johnson in the Red Zone. And I don't there are a whole lot of defenses that contain both of those guys.

Like I said, if the Lions win more than 4 games I would be surprised. It is not impossible, but I would be surprised.

I altered the page title slightly, because it was slightly too general, and we may need it for other things in future. I hope you don't mind.

The Lions may finally bring you some joy this year. Don't expect a berth in the Super Bowl, but you may be playing meaningful football in December and Jan!

Expect Jon Kitna to absorb Mike Martz's pass heavy offense and flourish in their second full season together. A 7 or 8 win season would not be so much a miracle as it is a legitimate possibility, especially in the weak NFC North.

While the Lions offense looks real good with Roy, Calvin, Furrey, Kitna & the RB by comittee, thier Def is very suspect... the Def line MIGHT be ok, but Fernando Bryant, Keith Smith & Kenoy Kennedy can all be beaten deep which is going to hurt huge...

That being said, realisticly, let's examine the Lions schedule: @ Oak - possible win... Oak has decent Def (which the Lions lack) but a shaky Off. Min - Win @ Phi - Loss Chi - Loss... Chi Def is way too strong @ Was - Loss.. Lions Def looses game TB - Wish for a win here but this will be another loss @ Chi - Loss Den - Loss @ Arz - Loss... Again the Def blows it... NYG - Loss GB - Win @ Min - Win Dal - Loss @ SD - Loss... If you say the Lions win here, I'll ask you to pass whatever you're smoking... KC - Loss @ GB - At GB in late Dec? That's a loss...

That's a 3-13 maybe 4-12 season... and this coming from a Lions fan that has season tickets...

I can see Detroit winning six games in all likelihood, just based on how many close games they did cough up last season. We can't expect them to tank that many AGAIN, can we? However, all the talk by people saying DET will win 10, are also the guys that think that Tim Donaghy didn't bet on NBA games.

They could get into the 5-6 range since the NFC North's pretty lousy, but expecting a playoff berth is a pipedream; give them time. Remember last time they were a plyoff team it w via a running game, which they don't have much of.

Well...look at it realistically...you've got the bears in their division, the seahawks are a good team, you've got new orleans in the south (who will be worse) and perhaps Carolina (especially in an odd year) and in the east you've got Philly and (ugh) Dallas...given that there are two spots...do you think detroit can be out the likes of Dallas, Carolina, the weirdness of the west (St. Lou, 'zona and San Fran...all of which could win a WC spot or the division and we wouldn't be surprised) and maybe even green bay...i'm not sure... oh but they signed cory redding to a fat deal...greeeaaatttt...

The Lions are proof that Detroit is far more of a football town than a "Hockeytown." The Lions are the only team in Detroit that has a supportive fan-base no matter how lousy the team is. Ford may be the worst owner in sports. In a league with as much parity as the NFL, the Lions have won one playoff game since 1957 and finished with 10+ wins only 3 times since 1970. Who ever thought we would be looking at the Wayne Fontes era as the good old days? No curse in the D, just good old fashioned incompetence. I don't honestly see them winning more than five. Martz' offense runs up a lot of numbers, but situational playcalling is beneath him. They don't do the little things like run the ball to run out the clock. I think Marinelli is a great positional coach, but I am not sold on his ability to lead a team. When you are competing with guys like Bellicheck, Shanahan, and Dungy you need more strategy than "get low." I think the souring point for me was last year in pre-season when he flew his team out to Oakland the morning of the game, played the game, and then flew them back that day because he felt that they were not tough enough.
