The Dutch are one of the strongest non-Test nations and will be competing in their third World Cup in 2007.
They are in the same group as two of the tournament favourites, Australia and South Africa, and are unlikely to qualify for the latter stages of the competition. Their aim will be to beat the other minnow in their group, namely Scotland, who are also a strong team.
Luuk van Troost
Type: All Rounder, Captain
A specialist captain really, van Troost is a player that can bat and bowl a bit without doing either particularly well.
Adeel Raja
Type: Bowler
Raja has developed into one of the top cricketers in the Netherlands with his off-spin bowling.
Peter Borren
Type: Bowler
A converted New Zealander, Borren is a medium pacer with decent talent.
Tim de Leede
Type: All Rounder
De Leede has been a member of the Dutch squad since their first World Cup, and the 39 year old hopes to go out on a high as this is probably his last World Cup. He is an exciting middle order batsman that bowls decent medium pace.
Mark Jonkman
Type: Bowler
Jonkman is a fast bowler, who modelled his action on Brett Lee. He hopes to be the fastest in the non-Test arena, and hopes to develop his batting to be of Lee’s standard too.
Alexei Kervezee
Type: Batsman
An enthusiastic player with good potential, the 17 year old Kervezee hopes to develop his batting, and become a medium pacer for his country. Signed by Worcestershire, an English County in 2007, he has the chance to become an excellent player.
Mohammad Kashif
Type: Bowler
Kashif has a lot of potential, but is currently being kept out of the side by Adeel Raja. He is constantly working to improve his batting and fielding all the time.
Darron Reekers
Type: All Rounder
Reekers is a strong bowling all rounder, who is Flintoff-esque in stature. He could be a key player for the Dutch.
Edgar Schiferli
Type: Bowler
Schiferli has played well against weak opposition in the ICC Trophy, but has yet to bring that form to the international arena.
Jeroen Smits
Type: Batsman, Wicketkeeper
Smits is the Number 1 wicketkeeper, but his batting is not as strong as some international ‘keepers. Should play in the World Cup.
Billy Stelling
Type: All Rounder
Stelling is a controversial cricketer, but at 37 he should play a vital role in the World Cup. Initially a bowler, Stelling has learned to bat well at 7 for his country, and won some important games.
Eric Szwarczynski
Type: Batsman (opener)
A batsman that has become one of the top in the Netherlands, Szwarczynski has become a reliable opener for his country. He is keen to learn how to bowl with the aim of improving his ability for future years.
Ryan ten Doeschate
Type: All Rounder
The best cricketer in the Netherlands. Was part of an Essex team that won the County Championship in 2005. He could be a star in the World Cup if he performs to his best.
Daan van Bunge
Type: All Rounder
Another Dutch all rounder with proven credentials, van Bunge is a batting specialist that can contribute overs if required.
Baastian Zuiderent
Type: Batsman
Zuiderent hasn’t fulfilled the potential he showed 10 years ago with Sussex. He will still hope to perform to the top level however and lift the Dutch to victory over Scotland.
Strengths
- Full of confidence and no expectations
- A star in ten Doeschate
- Learning for the future
Weaknesses
- No top level experience
- Lack of depth to all facets of the game
- Players not developed yet
Verdict
If they were in another group, they would have a chance of an upset, but the group they have makes it practically impossible for them to get a win. On paper, they are the best non-Test side, but they haven’t shown this in matches against the rest of the non-Test countries. Their game against Scotland will be an entertaining one, as both teams are well matched. Expect some competent performances, and third in the group to be achieved. They may have to hope it rains.
