Bermuda shocked many by getting to this World Cup ahead of the likes of the United Arab Emirates and even the United States. Yet they are fully deserving of their place here.
They have been drawn in a group with three Asian sides, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, and as such it would be difficult to see them advancing with three Test nations in their group.
Irvine Romaine
Type: Batsman, Captain, Wicketkeeper
Romaine can keep wicket if he needs too, and is a capable batsman at the top level. He has led the Bermudans to their first World Cup.
Deylone Borden
Type: All Rounder
Borden is a batsman that has disappointed early in his career. Indeed, he has found more form with the ball, so he perhaps justifies his all rounder status.
Lionel Cann
Type: Batsman
Against weak opposition, Cann has proved he is the Bermudan’s best batsman. If they are to pull off a shock, Cann needs to be at his best.
David Hemp
Type: Batsman
Bermuda’s best known player, Hemp has had a successful first-class career in England with both Warwickshire and Glamorgan. He will need to lead from the front in this competition.
Kevin Hurdle
Type: Bowler
Hurdle is a fast bowler that lifts the moral of his team when he bowls. It will be interesting to see how he performs in this competition.
Malachi Jones
Type: All Rounder
Jones is an exciting prospect. At just 17, this tournament may come too soon for him, but he is set for a good future in the game.
Stefan Kelly
Type: Bowler
At just 18, Kelly is a good prospect for the future. He is a very able fast bowler for Bermuda.
Dwayne Leverock
Type: Bowler
Leverock is a spin bowler that has dominated against the ICC members. It will be interesting to see how he goes against the “big-boys” in this group.
Dean Minors
Type: Batsman, Wicketkeeper
Minors has been compared to Jeffrey Dijon – at least by his coach. Minors is an excitable wicketkeeper, but he realistically is a decent batsman, if not one that can set the world alight.
Saleem Mukuddem
Type: All Rounder
Mukuddem is a capable all rounder that has yet to really star. He is a solid rather than star performer.
Steven Outerbridge
Type: Batsman (opener)
Outerbridge is a capable opener. He is young and constantly learning. Could be a future star.
Oliver Pitcher
Type: All Rounder
Pitcher will be making his debut for Bermuda in this tournament. He has had a solid if not spectacular career so far.
Clay Smith
Type: Batsman
Smith once hit Courtney Walsh around the park for a hundred, but injury has curtailed his top level career. Now he is back, and is still a good performer for Bermuda, even if he hasn’t been at his best yet.
Janeiro Tucker
Type: All Rounder
Tucker is Bermuda’s most potent all rounder with both bat and ball. Will need a good tournament.
Kwame Tucker
Type: Batsman, Wicketkeeper
Bermuda’s Number 2 wicketkeeper, Tucker’s batting isn’t good enough to get him in the side ahead of Minors.
Strengths
- David Hemp has first-class experience
- Other decent players like Janiero Tucker, Minors and Romaine
- Good mix of youth and experience
Weaknesses
- Lack of World Class talent
- Poor depth to bowling in particular
Verdict
Bermuda should be happy to have gotten this far. Hemp will need to carry them through like no-one has ever carried if Bermuda are to do well in this competition. They will be playing for pride, as you can no longer look to Bangladesh as being walkover opponents.
