2007 Big East Preview and Predictions

by Sportprojections

Loyal bloggers and fans from each Big East school have contributed to our 2007 Big East College Football Preview. They created a preview for their teams, a win-loss prediction for each game during the season, a prediction for bowl games, and their projected final standings in the Big East. Click on each team name to visit its team page and read the season preview.

The 2006 Big East was won by Louisville. It was a chase for the BCS bid until the end of the season with Rutgers and West Virginia in the hunt. Rutgers was the surprise team of the season. They hope to show they aren’t a one year fluke. South Florida also showed they could play with the big guys as they upset West Virginia last year. Many critics complained the Big East wasn’t a strong conference during the season but bowl attending teams proved them wrong by going 5-0 in bowl games.
Here are the final standings for last year:
1. Louisville 12-1 6-1
2. Rutgers 11-2 5-2
3. West Virginia 11-2 5-2
4. South Florida 9-4 4-3
5. Cincinnati 8-5 4-3
6. Pittsburgh 6-6 2-5
7. Connecticut 4-8 1-6
8. Syracuse 4-8 1-6

The 2007 preseason predictions show West Virginia winning the Big East this season. They received 5 out of 8 first place votes.

The 2007 Preseason Big East college football standings:
1. West Virginia (5)
2. Louisville (2)
3. Rutgers (1)
4. South Florida
5. Pittsburgh
6. Cincinnati
7. Connecticut
8. Syracuse

Once again, click on the team name to view its preseason preview and to vote for how many games they will win this season. We want to thank all the contributors for their time and willingness to help us with our preview.

The Big East should not be considered a BCS conference any longer. Look at these teams / colleges and tell me - does the Big East really deserve an automatic bid to the BCS Series?

Any major football conference where the Cincinnati Bearcats can win 4 games is probably not deserving of an automatic BCS bid. And I say this as an alum.

There are more than 3 teams in the Big East for football? I thought all they had was Louisville, Rutgers and West Virginia. You mean those other schools aren't basketball only ones?  ;)

The Big East is inferior but they still deserve a BCS bid. West Virginia, Louisville, and Rutgers are all Top 25 teams. While the SEC, Big Ten, Pac 10, and Big 12 are stronger conferences, it's hard to argue with the Big East's top 3. Bevause of their easier conference schedules, we could see one playing for the National Championship.

West Virginia is much over-rated in the pre-season polls.

Two teams in the top ten is far from inferior. Not to mention, the storied histories of Syracuse and Pitt. Rutgers, Louisville, and WVU all proved that thier records were not due to a soft confrence. Don't just buy into media hype cause Miami, VT, and BC all left. Take a closer look, it is the Big East who is laughing now, VT is the only one of those teams not on the outside looking in now. I am sure there are years where the other BCS confrences don't finish as well as the Big East did last year, but I guess since it's the Big Ten or SEC you will call it an off year. I'm sick of this debate. The best of the Big east can go toe to toe with the best of any other confrence.

What has Syracuse or Pitt done in a decade?

I called it histories for a reason. And yes, it is a long history.

If the best of the Big East were playing a Big Ten or SEC schedule instead of a Big East schedule, we would no longer be calling them the best of anything.

If those confrences are so tough then how do any of the teams go undefeated? 5-0 in bowl games last year. Why did PSU elect to play the westminister school for girls with thier eleventh game instead of reviving the Pitt PSU rivalry? I guess cause they don't want to soften their schedule with a Big East team right? BTW Pitt won the last two meetings between them.

Going 5-0 in bowls against the likes of Western Michigan, Wake Forest, East Carolina, Kansas State, and Georgia Tech is, really, not that impressive.
