2006 Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 Discussion

This isn't really an article, just wanted to get some opinions on the game as it's happening. Feel free to add your thoughts through editing or comments.

I know (at least I hope), that Christof and I aren't the only people watching the game. Tell us what you think!!!

Middle of the 1st Period: Carolina is absolutly KILLING Edmonton. The energy in the building is ridiculous, the goal was exaclty what Carolina needed to get a good jump on Edmonton. If they keep up the way they are playing, Carolina will win easily. --MadProof9

End of the 1st Period: Edmonton just got the luckiest break I have ever seen, after they had already started to turn it around. The first goal was great for Carolina, but the way Edmonton has picked it up, along with the luck they just got, it's still easily anyone's game. --MadProof9

Middle of the 2nd Period: Edmonton needs to stop being fancy, and shoot the puck. They are down by 2 goals, the season is on the line, they cannot keep trying to make great looking goals with amazing passes. There have have at least 4 times when they could have taken a shot, but instead tried to pass it. "100% of the shots you don't take don't go in." --MadProof9

CAR needed to get off to a fast start, and they have. If the Canes score the next goal, making it 2-0, I see the wheels completely falling off for the Oilers.

I agree. It seems Edmonton is picking it up, but the next goal is probably the most important goal of the game.

Good point. Killing that power play was key for the Oil. I thought it was a bogus call, didn't really seem like a hold at all, but oh well, good kill.

Canes are very dis-organized with the man advantage. They are rushing things. If they want a goal then need to settle down.

It should be a penalty shot and a penalty. A defenseman cannot cover the puck in the crease.

But if they had possesion beforehand, then the first penenlty would blow the whistle.

HUGE break for Edmonton. HUGE!!! That could be a turning point for them. No goal, no penelty shot. Possilby the luckiest sequence of events for the Oil that I've ever seen in a hockey game.

That was a horrible situation for the refs. There was so much going on in the crease, a goalie, a player, a delayed penelty, they Edmonton stick that barely tipped it. It could have easily gone either way, and neither coach could have complained too much. Edmonton just got lucky.

Hopefully, they can correct this, and have a penalty shot at the beginning of the second period. It is better to get this right late than not at all.

As soon as the puck is dropped the last play can no longer be reviewed. All the announcers seem split, even the Carolina player they interviewed didin't seem especially upset with the call, just a little confused. If this was OT, or if Carolina was losing, I think it would be a bigger deal. The 'Canes still have the lead, and as of right now the play wasn't one that will decide the outcome. It may come into play more later, but for now it's just another play.

At the 12:17 mark in the second, you can see the Oilers are getting desperate. They are hitting the Canes hard, but beyond that, they are not generating any good scoring chances.

I have had the chance to attend several NHL playoff games with the Philadlephia Flyers, including clincing games of series. However, I have never been to a Game 7 or a Stanley Cup Finals game. I can only image the electricty level at the arena now. It is a shame that you can't really get the feel for that atmosphere on the TV.

I was at Game 7 when the Avs beat the Ducks, Bourque won his cup. The moment when Sakic didn't even lift the cup, but gave it right to Bourque, it was CRAZY. It was just like tonight, the fans stood the whole game. It's an experience. I've been to a Superbowl, and I've been to a Game 7. Game 7 is a million times crazier. You can't describe it, you have to be there.

We need to recruit more people to hockey, period. This is the best sport in the world, if it is played currently (the NHL from 1996-2004 was not real hockey). I hope that HTV will start attracting viewers and fans.

They need to stop passing so much and get some shots. Sure, you have to pass a little, but you can't pass 100 times and try to get the perfect shot. Take a shot, get a tip, and get a goal.

I was watching it in England (at 1:30-4:00am...) Great game. I was watching it in bed, the computer was in a different room... I wanted Edmonton to win, so Detroit could lose to the champions, but oh well. We'll just have to win next year! Ward played brilliantly. I only saw Game 7, but if he played like that the rest of the series, he deserves it. It was good to see two Number 2 goalies step up. I wonder who starts for Carolina next year... Gerber or Ward?
