Round Eight of the season saw the British Grand Prix held much earlier than normal, due to the World Cup, and the home fans thought they had a chance in the Semi Finals, which would be when the race would have been held. So the FIA moved the United States and Canadian Grands Prix to go on when the football was.

Silverstone would witness a demonstration from Fernando Alonso, who was one lap away from achieving the Grand Chelem. It was a dominating performance, and it saw Alonso win easily.

Behind Alonso, Michael Schumacher was desperate to move up the grid from his third in qualifying. He managed to pass Kimi Raikkonen for second place. Raikkonen hung on for third. Renault's Number 2, Giancarlo Fisichella finished fourth, again struggling to match Alonso's pace.

The race was disappointing for home favourite Jenson Button, who after only qualifying in 19th place, began to tear through the field. His progress was halted by an oil leak. This caused him to spin and forced him to retire from the race. Honda had reached their lowest point of the season.

Fernando Alonso lead by seventeen from Michael Schumacher and it seemed that the Championship race was heading Alonso's way. The Renault seemed to be dominating the Ferrari, and it was thought the gap would only get bigger.
