The Tigers could not escape the clutches of a 12th consecutive losing season in 2005, but got an encouraging look at a solid core of young players-including pitchers Jeremy Bonderman, Nate Robertson, Mike Maroth, and Justin Verlander- around whom they'll build. Two key bats (outfielder Magglio Ordonez and shorstop Carlos Guillen) spent much of the year injured.
