[edit] Season Recap
Miami was knocked out of the national title picture after November losses at Virgina Tech and at home to Tennessee. Miami started strong with early come from behind wins against Florida and West Virginia. However, starting tailback, Redshirt Sophomore Frank Gore, blew out his knee in the West Virginia game and was lost for the season. Senior Jarrett Payton took over and had his best performance of the season in his first game as a starter in Miami's 22-14 win at Florida State. The FSU game will most likely be remembered for the near tropical storm weather conditions that the game was played in and Junior Wide Receiver Roscoe Parrish being knocked out cold after a big hit by a FSU defender.
Miami was ranked #2 in the BCS Poll when they were upset in Blacksburg by Virginia Tech 31-7, Miami's first regular season loss under Coach Larry Coker. The following week Miami was beaten at home for the first time in four years by Tennessee 10-3. The Tennessee game was followed by Junior Tight End Kellen Winslow's "soldier" tirade that got him benched for the first half of the Syracuse game. Brock Berlin also lost his starting job as a result of the Tennessee game but he was benched for poor performance.
Junior Derrick Crudup took over at QB in Miami's win over Syracuse but the offense didn't play any better so Berlin got his job back for Miami's regular season finale. In the finale, Miami traveled to Pittsburg with the Big East title on the line. Freshman Tailback Tyrone Moss had a break out game, rushing for over 100 yards and Miami took care of business and won it's third consecutive Big East Championship.
Miami's conference title earned them a trip to the Orange Bowl for a rematch with ACC Champion, Florida State. FSU led the entire game but Jon Peattie kicked three field goals including the go ahead FG to put Miami ahead 16-14. FSU had a chance to take the lead late but Miami blocked a FSU field goal attempt to won the game 16-14.
Miami finished the season 11-2 but the 2003 squad will go down as the group that set the record for the most NFL 1st Round draft picks from one school (6). With Safety Sean Taylor, Tight End Kellen Winslow II, Linebackers Jonathan Vima & D.J. Williams, Offensive Lineman Vernon Carey, and Defensive Lineman Vince Wilfork all being drafted in the first round.
