[edit] Season Recap

The Hurricanes started the 2001 season out with a bang, dominating Penn State in front of a 100,000 plus crowd at State College. Miami took off with a 30-0 half time lead and never looked back. After Miami romped the Lions they continued their streak against Rutgers thrashing Greg Schiano's Knights 61-0 in Miami's home opener. The 'Canes then traveled to Pittsburgh on a Thursday night and spanked the Panthers 43-21 after starting off with a 40-7 lead before Pitt scored twice late in the fourth quarter. After a slow game versus Troy State, Miami traveled to Doak Campbell Stadium to play the Florida State Seminoles. Miami hadn't won in Doak since 1991 and the 'Canes wanted to end that drought in a hurry. The 'Canes squashed FSU's 54 home win streak like it was nothin' and rolled 49-27.

Miami continued its great season with lopsided victories against West Virginia and Temple before the first of two huge scares in Boston. BC wasn't playing around and St. Pierre lead his team to a near comeback that was spoiled after Matt Walters intercepted a tipped ball off of Mike Rumph's thigh and Ed Reed "stole" the ball from Walters to scamper into the end zone to preserve the 'Canes victory. Miami then mauled its next two opponents, Syracuse (#15) and Washington (#14) by a combined 124-7. Washington, by the way, has vowed never to play the 'Canes again. December 1st marked the date for Miami's second scare on it's way to the Rose Bowl. Miami hadn't won at Virginia Tech in nine years (4 games). The 'Canes came out and got the job done after an open Tech receiver dropped the game tying 2-point conversion pass in the end-zone all alone.

The 'Canes would close out the 2001 season with a win over Nebraska in the 2002 Rose Bowl 37-14. Nebraska only scored 1 offensive TD (2nd td scored on special teams), and Heisman Trophy winning QB Eric Crouch was shut down by the 'Canes quick and relentless defense. Miami's MVP's were both on offense, and were QB Ken Dorsey and WR Andre Johnson. The entire team deserved the award, but those two were extremely impressive. Johnson caught 2 TD's and nearly 200 yards; while Ken Dorsey threw for more than 300 yards. Portis rushed for yet another 100+ yard game proving that a balanced offense (something Nebraska lacks in) is the way to win in college football. The defense was lead by captain Ed Reed, and Sophomore Linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Vilma laid two crushing blows on Nebraska that set the tone for the game.
