  • Boston beat Philadelphia 6-5 in the first official National League baseball game.

  • The final game of the 1919 Stanley Cup Final series was canceled due to an influenza epidemic. No winner was declared in the series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Seattle Metropolitans.

  • By signing with Chattanooga, Jackie Mitchell became the first female in professional baseball.

  • The Baseball Hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown, NY.

  • Federal Bankruptcy Referee Sidney Volinn declares the Seattle Pilots and owner Dewey Soriano bankrupt, paving the way for the sale of the team to Allan H. "Bud" Selig, who will move the team to Milwaukee, Wis. and rename them the Brewers.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-1, to clinch second place in the NHL's Western Division. The win earned the Penguins their first ever appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

  • New York Islanders rookie Mike Bossy becomes the first NHL rookie to register 50 goals in a season.
