- Federal Bankruptcy Referee Sidney Volinn declares the Seattle Pilots and owner Dewey Soriano bankrupt, paving the way for the sale of the team to Allan H. "Bud" Selig, who will move the team to Milwaukee, Wis. and rename them the Brewers.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-1, to clinch second place in the NHL's Western Division. The win earned the Penguins their first ever appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
- Players began the first strike in the 75-year history of the National Hockey League (NHL).
