[edit] 1997 NHL Entry Draft Summary

The city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania welcomed the NHL Entry Draft on Saturday June 21, 1997. The draft proceedings were open to the public and tickets were free but had to requested in advance. The NHL and hosts Pittsburgh Penguins planned three days of events. Thursday featured a Top Prospects clinic with prospects Joe Thornton, Daniel Tkaczuk, Paul Mara, Brad Ference and also Penguins goaltender Ken Wregget. On Friday a Prospects Press Conference was held at Point State Park which was hosted by former Penguin Troy Loney and introduced by NHL Vice President Brian Burke. Saturday saw the draft itself as well as trophy displays, autograph sessions and puppet shows. The draft was also televised in North America. In the United States ESPN2 televised the first round live. In Canada TSN televised the draft in English and RDS, Réseau des sports, televised the draft in French.

Prior to the start of the draft the Penguins introduced their new head coach Kevin Constantine. He received a loud ovation from the Pittsburgh fans and he said, "Thanks so much for having me, and I can't wait to get going." The fans were not so kind when NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman stepped up to the podium to start the draft. A loud chorus of boos were heard and Bettman stated, "Good Morning, it's not that bad." Many Penguins fans blamed Bettman for the state of the NHL which the fans believed caused the retirement of Penguin superstar Mario Lemieux after the 1996-97 season.

The draft order was set using a weighted lottery for the non-playoff teams of the previous season. The Boston Bruins who finished last overall in points won the lottery and retained the number one overall selection. The entire draft order was Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche.

The New York Islanders made history in the first round of the draft when they selected Roberto Luongo. Luongo was selected fourth overall making him the highest ever selected goaltender in NHL Draft history. The previous high water mark for goalies was fifth overall. Tom Barrasso in 1983, John Davidson in 1973 and Ray Martiniuk in 1970 were the goalies who set the previous selection record.

The Carolina Hurricanes were a team in transition in the summer of 1997. The Hurricanes played the 1996-97 season as the Hartford Whalers, but in March of 1997 the club announced their plans to move to North Carolina. As a result the Hurricanes did not have a jersey ready for their number one selection of Nikos Tselios who had to don a plain white jersey with a NHL logo on the front.

As of the close of the 2007-08 season the player with the most regular season games played from the 1997 Entry Draft is Patrick Marleau with 795 NHL games played, the leader in goals scored is Marian Hossa with 299 goals and the scoring leader is Joe Thornton with 756 points.
